Who's Hot and Who's Not: MLB Pitchers

Noah Cameron threw a one-hit shutout in Anaheim on August 16: nine innings, one hit, one walk, eight strikeouts, zero earned runs. Five days later he threw five more scoreless. Those two starts are why he owns the 10-day pitcher board.

AthX Engine scored pitching lines from August 16 through August 25. Cameron finished with 55 pitching fantasy points. Cal Quantrill was next at 48. Gavin Williams finished last among qualified two-start arms at 0.99 FP, including 1 1/3 innings and five earned in Cleveland's extra-inning win on August 25.

Same slate, opposite 10 days. Sibling boards: hitters and teams.

Two starts, 14 scoreless, a clear first

A 10-day pitcher list is almost always a two-start list. Treat it that way.

Cameron's first outing was the complete game. Kansas City won 3-0 at the Angels. AthX Engine scored that night at 41 pitching fantasy points by itself. His second start was shorter (five innings, two hits, three walks, two strikeouts, zero earned) and still a win. Window totals: 14 innings, 10 strikeouts, 0 earned runs, 3 hits, 4 walks, 2-0, 0.00 ERA in the stretch, 55 AthX Engine pitching FP.

Quantrill got to 48 without the nine-inning night: 13 innings, 11 strikeouts, 0 earned, 0 walks, two quality starts, two wins. Zero walks in 13 innings is the clean version of the same assignment. Cade Cavalli punched out 18 in 12 innings (44 FP, 2 ER). Blake Snell allowed one earned in 12 innings (43 FP). Dylan Cease matched Cavalli's 18 strikeouts in 13 innings (42.99 FP).

The rest of the heat is length

Parker Messick threw 12 2/3 innings with 14 strikeouts (40.66 FP) and still took a loss in one of the two starts. Logan Henderson went 2-0 in 13 innings for Milwaukee (40 FP). Braxton Ashcraft threw 14 innings with two earned (38 FP) and only six strikeouts. Length plus run prevention still prints. Cameron just printed more, because a one-hit complete game is a scoring event of its own.

Tarik Skubal tied Ashcraft at 38 FP (13 innings, 18 K, 4 ER) in a Dodgers uniform. Aaron Nola still scored 37 FP across two starts even with Tuesday's loss in Seattle. The hot board can hold a loss. It will not hold 1 1/3 innings of five runs.

Pitchers needed more pitching FP than hitting FP. Qualification for the cold board below is two appearances and six-plus innings. ERA is for this window only, not season ERA.

The freeze: Williams, then a trail of crooked innings

Williams is the split-screen starter on this board.

He struck out 14 in seven innings across two starts and still finished at 0.99 pitching FP because seven of those innings came with seven earned runs. Tuesday in Anaheim was the ugly half: 1 1/3 innings, six hits, five earned in a game the Guardians still won 8-6 in 10. Strikeouts could not outrun the fifth-inning-before-the-second-inning version of a start.

Jake Irvin and Quinn Mathews both sat at 1.00 FP. Irvin: 12 innings, 10 K, 8 ER, 0-2. Mathews: 9 innings, 10 K, 8 ER. Sean Burke (1.33) and Chase Burns (1.66) are next. Burns still struck out 13 in 8 2/3 innings. He also allowed 7 earned. That is how a strikeout pitcher lands on the cold list.

Matthew Liberatore threw 10 innings, struck out 16, and allowed 11 earned (3.00 FP, 0-2), including eight runs in four innings in the Orioles' 13-1 win. Brandon Pfaadt allowed 9 earned in 12 1/3 (4.32 FP) after sitting on the prior hot board. Ten days flip for pitchers too.

Cold rank 1 is the lowest FP among pitchers with two appearances and six-plus innings. One short start can sink a two-start week. Williams's did.

What 10 days actually tell you

Cameron won because one start was a complete-game shutout and the other was still zeros. Quantrill won the walk-free version. Williams lost the board while his team won the game, which is the whole point of scoring the individual line.

Nola can sit 11th on a hot board and still lose Tuesday. Liberatore can strike out 16 and finish sixth-coldest. Count the earned runs.

Fantasy points measure what a pitcher did. Price is what the market will pay. They move together, but they are not the same number. See dynamic pricing explained.
