AthX Top Pitchers, Hitters & Team Scores (September 2, 2026)

Pitchers owned Wednesday. One pitcher in particular.

September 2, 2026 was a 15-game Wednesday slate, and the two games that ran past midnight on the West Coast — Cardinals at Dodgers, Yankees at Angels — were the best ones. Both went extras. Both ended with road teams scoring multiple times in the 10th.

On the AthX Engine board, Cam Schlittler's eight innings and nine strikeouts separated the pitching card cleanly from everyone else. Andrew Painter had a gem that a solo homer stole. Henry Bolte hit two in a game the Athletics turned into a nine-run blowout. The Toronto Blue Jays put up the day's best team score by shutting out Cleveland 11-0.

Toronto sits at the top because an 11-0 win does what it does for team scoring. Atlanta's shutout of Washington comes second. The Mets, Tigers and A's all posted 19 FP on different kinds of offensive nights.

Five pitchers threw seven or more innings Wednesday. Schlittler led at 29 FP because eight innings and nine strikeouts and zero walks is a different conversation. Painter's 27 is the more interesting line because he threw seven scoreless innings into a 1-0 loss — one McCann homer off the reliever who followed him. Trevor Rogers' 21.66 with 11 strikeouts belongs in the top five on any night.

Bolte's two-homer day in Arlington was the standout hitting performance. Guerrero's five-RBI night in an 11-0 win checks second. Freeman's homer ends a 47-game drought, which earns its own table slot even if it came in a loss.

Six featured games from Wednesday

  • Blue Jays 11, Guardians 0: Cease six shutout innings. Guerrero homer and five RBI in the second. Toronto tightens the AL wild-card race.
  • Yankees 6, Angels 3: Schlittler 8 IP, 9 K, 0 BB. Tied 1-1 through nine. Five two-out runs in the 10th.
  • Cardinals 8, Dodgers 6: Freeman snaps 47-game homer drought. Saggese's infield single walks it off in the 10th. Ohtani strikes out four times.
  • Athletics 9, Rangers 2: Bolte two homers. Lopez six innings. A's avoid the sweep at Globe Life.
  • Diamondbacks 1, Phillies 0: Painter seven scoreless. McCann solo homer in the eighth off the reliever. Arizona moves ahead of San Diego in the NL wild card.
  • Rockies 6, Orioles 5: Rogers career-high 11 strikeouts. Baltimore leads by two in the 11th. Sullivan bloops a walk-off single.
  • Other games: Braves 9, Nationals 0; Mariners 8, Red Sox 3; Mets 10, Rays 4; Giants 5, Pirates 4 (F/10); Tigers 11, Twins 6 (F/10); Marlins 9, Royals 6; Brewers 9, Cubs 5; Astros 2, White Sox 0.

    What stood out

Schlittler's outing is the card's story and his ERA (2.04) keeps declining in September. Painter posted more FP with seven scoreless and lost on one pitch. That's the job description for a No. 2 starter on a contender in September.

The AL wild-card race is a mess. Toronto, Baltimore and Texas are all 1 1/2 back of Cleveland after Wednesday's results, and all three have a shot with a month left. The Orioles wasting Rogers' 11-strikeout performance in Denver is the kind of thing that stings in the final standings.
