Royals 3, Guardians 0: Wacha Throws Eight, 10 Strikeouts, Four Singles

Four singles in eight innings. Cleveland never got a second look.

August 28, 2026 – Cleveland – The Cleveland Guardians had just come home from a 6-0 trip. They had won seven in a row. Tanner Bibee threw six innings and one run.

Michael Wacha threw eight. Four singles. Zero walks. Ten strikeouts. 103 pitches. The Kansas City Royals won 3-0 at Progressive Field and made it 11 wins in 12 games.

José Ramírez went 0-for-4. Steven Kwan went 0-for-4. Nathaniel Lowe struck out three times. The Guardians never put a runner past second against Wacha.

One groundout in the fifth. Then Jensen made it 3-0.

Kansas City missed early chances. Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the fifth and moved to third on a flyout. Salvador Perez grounded out to short, hard enough to score Witt. 1-0. That was the only run Bibee allowed, and it was the only run Wacha needed for a long time.

Jac Caglianone had two hits. Vinnie Pasquantino reached twice. Isaac Collins doubled. The lineup kept knocking and did not break through again until the ninth. Carter Jensen hit a two-run homer to right-center off Craig Yoho, his 19th. Tyler Tolbert scored ahead of him. 3-0.

Bibee fell to 5-14. He has been getting 3.17 runs of support per game, third-lowest in the majors. Friday he got one, and Wacha got all of them.

Cruz loaded the bases. Genao hit into the last out.

Wacha's season-high 10 strikeouts sat on 75 strikes. He leads the American League with 18 quality starts. He is 6-1 against AL Central clubs this year. Patrick Bailey had two of Cleveland's six hits. Chase DeLauter and Jo Adell each singled and each struck out twice. That was the offense.

Steven Cruz pitched the ninth. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases. Angel Genao bounced back to the mound. Cruz had his sixth save. Kansas City is 23-16 since the All-Star break. A 1-0 game into the ninth is supposed to feel nervous. Wacha had already taken the nervous part out of it.

AthX Engine put Wacha in a different zip code

AthX Engine scored Wacha at 34 pitching fantasy points, first among Friday's pitchers. Kansas City still finished with only 9 team fantasy points, because a 3-0 win does not print a 13-run team card. The pitcher board and the team board told different truths. Both were right.

Fantasy points measure the night. They are not share price.

What's next

Daniel Lynch is lined up against Foster Griffin on Saturday. Kansas City just beat a seven-game winner with four singles allowed and one run of offense until the ninth. Cleveland has to hit tomorrow. Wacha does not have to apologize for using 10 strikeouts to protect a 1-0 lead.
