Realmuto's sixth-inning double broke it open
July 12, 2026 - Detroit - For five innings Sunday at Comerica Park, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers played a quiet 0-0 game. Tarik Skubal was dealing. Zack Wheeler was dealing harder.
Then the sixth happened.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch pulled Skubal after Bryce Harper led off with an infield single. Keider Montero came in. J.T. Realmuto cleared the bases with a three-run double and scored on Bryson Stott's single. Just like that: 5-0, series won, road trip done, All-Star Week waiting back home.
The Phillies blanked Detroit 5-0 to take the three-game set before the break, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.
Wheeler answered the All-Star snub with zeroes
Wheeler (10-1) struck out 10 in six scoreless innings and allowed two hits. It was his first start since he criticized Major League Baseball for leaving him off the Midsummer Classic roster after his previous outing.
If there was a statement start before Philadelphia hosts the Derby and All-Star Game, this was it.
Skubal (5-5) wasn't bad—two runs on four hits and a walk, five strikeouts in five-plus innings—but the two-time Cy Young Award winner couldn't survive Harper's infield chop and the bullpen cascade that followed.
Schwarber got the first run; Wheeler kept the rest off the board
Philadelphia broke through in the third when Kyle Schwarber singled on a full-count, two-out RBI hit off Skubal. Realmuto had been hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on Schwarber's knock.
That made it 2-0. Wheeler made it hold.
Detroit never generated much offense against him. The Tigers finished scoreless heading into the break while the Phillies flew home to Citizens Bank Park with six All-Stars and a Sunday ace performance on the board.
Sanchez gets the NL start; McGonigle gets his moment
During the game, the Phillies announced Cristopher Sánchez will start for the National League on Tuesday night in the All-Star Game at his home ballpark.
Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle, a 21-year-old rookie, also earned a spot in Philadelphia and said he's looking forward to the experience near his hometown and the high school he attended before Detroit drafted him in 2023.
Phillies manager Don Mattingly said before the game he wasn't ready to announce the team's pitching plan after the break. Detroit opens the second half Friday with Troy Melton (5-1, 1.82) against the Los Angeles Angels.
AthX Engine: Sunday's pitching ceiling
AthX Engine had Wheeler at 28 pitching FP—nearly 12 FP clear of the next arm on the Sunday slate and the clear daily leader. Realmuto's 9 hitting FP paced the offense. Philadelphia graded at 13 team FP into All-Star Week.
That's the kind of shutout efficiency AthX Engine rewards on a one-game card, separate from dynamic pricing on shares.
