AL 4, NL 0: Bellinger Wins MVP as American League Dominates 2026 All-Star Game

The lead

July 14, 2026 - Philadelphia - Cody Bellinger lined a two-run single, Ben Rice followed with an RBI single, and the American League blanked the National League 4-0 in the 96th MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park, per MLB.com and ESPN.

Bellinger won All-Star MVP—the fourth Yankee to take the award, joining Giancarlo Stanton (2022), Mariano Rivera (2013), and Derek Jeter (2000). Miguel Vargas supplied the game's only home run, a 433-foot solo shot in the eighth. The AL moved its all-time Midsummer Classic lead to 49-45-2.

How the game turned

The AL needed only the first inning.

Against hometown lefty Cristopher Sánchez, the Junior Circuit loaded the bases and went to work. Bellinger, batting with two outs, ripped a 101.1 mph single to center that scored Yordan Alvarez and catcher Shea Langeliers, with Bobby Witt Jr. taking third. Rice immediately punched another single through the middle to make it 3-0.

A Phillies crowd that had just watched Schwarber lose the Derby the night before then watched its ace take a rare home hiccup. That three-run cushion never got smaller.

Vargas, who entered early as a pinch-runner when Junior Caminero exited injured in the third, finished it in the eighth—crushing a solo homer into the second deck off Justin Wrobleski of the Dodgers. After the game, Vargas traded a signed bat and All-Star ball for the souvenir with the young fan who caught it.

Pitching and the strikeout parade

Dylan Cease started for the AL and struck out three of the four hitters he faced—Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, and CJ Abrams—working around a two-out walk to Freddie Freeman. It was the first three-strikeout first inning in an All-Star Game since Brad Penny in 2006.

Parker Messick and Michael Wacha followed, and the NL still had not recorded a hit when Soto finally broke through against Joe Ryan to open the fourth—only to be stranded. Manager Brad Schneider kept feeding strike-throwers; the AL finished with 15 strikeouts and limited the NL to three hits.

Sánchez took the loss (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER). The NL staff never found the crooked inning to answer.

  • AthX Engine angle

All-Star exhibitions sit outside the regular AthX Engine daily leaderboards, but the names that wrote this box score are the same ones that filled first-half monthly and daily boards:

  • Bellinger was AthX Engine's May Hitter of the Month before becoming Tuesday's MVP.
  • Cease authored a 35 pitching FP shutout for Toronto on July 8.
  • Vargas paced Chicago's pre-break surge and joined the All-Star story with the night's only homer.
  • Sánchez entered as the hometown Cy Young storyline from our All-Star preview—and became the pitcher who absorbed Philadelphia's first-inning quiet.
  • Fantasy scoring here is information, not a buy order, and separate from dynamic pricing.

    Philadelphia weekend checklist

All-Star Week in the City of Brotherly Love closed with:

    1. Home Run Derby — Jordan Walker over Schwarber, 12-11 2. All-Star Game — AL 4, NL 0; Bellinger MVP 3. Second-half baseball resumes with markets still measuring production over Midsummer Classic headlines

    What comes next

The second half opens with every All-Star share still priced by availability, second-half pace, and trader demand—not by one exhibition night in Philadelphia. Track whether Cease's strikeout night foreshadows more Toronto shutout ceilings, whether Vargas' blast travels into a sustained White Sox second half, and whether Sánchez resets after a rare Citizens Bank Park rough inning.
