Mets 15, Marlins 14: Lindor's Slam of a Seventh Holds On

An 8-0 lead lasted until it didn't

September 9, 2026 - Miami - The New York Mets led 8-0 after three. The Miami Marlins tied it at 8 in the sixth. New York scored six in the seventh. Miami scored five more after that. Tobias Myers struck out Owen Caissie with the tying run on and the winning run at the plate.

Final: Mets 15, Marlins 14. Series sweep. Roof closed. 10,955 in the building. 3 hours, 38 minutes. Miami had 20 hits. New York had 15. Nobody's bullpen survived contact.

Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer in that seventh, his 18th. Christopher Morel went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three runs, and three RBI, a triple short of the cycle. Luis Torrens drove in four. A.J. Ewing went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a steal. Jakob Marsee had four hits and three RBI for Miami and still lost.

Six in the second, two more in the third

Janson Junk did not get out of the third. Three innings, eight hits, eight runs, one walk, zero strikeouts, 60 pitches. Jared Young and Marcus Semien were on in the second when Ewing singled. 1-0. Brett Baty singled Semien home. 2-0. Torrens doubled Ewing and Morel in. 4-0. Bo Bichette singled Torrens home. 5-0. Carson Benge grounded out, and Lindor scored. 6-0. It was still the second inning.

Morel hit his first Mets homer in the third, a two-run shot to left with Ewing aboard. 8-0. Juan Soto went 0-for-5 with a walk. The middle of the order did not need him. Young scored three times. Semien scored twice. Torrens finished 3-for-5 with a double.

Robert Stock started for New York and lasted four: five hits, three runs, two walks, four strikeouts, 80 pitches. Miami got on the board in the fourth. Otto Lopez scored on Graham Pauley's single. Joe Mack singled Marsee and Owen Caissie home. 8-3. Stock left with an 8-3 lead that looked safe. It was not.

Five in the sixth, then the game started over

Chris Devenski faced four hitters in the sixth and retired none of them in a way that helped. Caissie homered to center, his 14th. 8-4. Griffin Conine singled. Lopez walked, Mack scoring. Marsee singled home two. 8-8. Daniel Duarte inherited a tie game and got out of the inning. The 8-0 lead was a memory.

The seventh is why New York won. Josh Ekness (1-3) did not record an out: hit a batter, walked two, three runs. Ewing's sacrifice fly scored Benge. 9-8. Tyler Zuber came on. Morel singled Young home. 10-8. Torrens singled Semien home. 11-8. Lindor hit a three-run homer to right. 14-8. Four batters into Zuber's appearance, the Mets had a six-run lead again.

Mack homered in the bottom of the seventh, his 13th. 14-9. Torrens singled Young home in the eighth. 15-9. Caissie and Pauley singled in the bottom half. 15-11. The ninth was the part that made the sweep feel expensive.

Kyle Stowers doubled. Conine doubled him in. 15-12. Lopez tripled. 15-13. Nate Lavender was drowning. Marsee singled Lopez home. 15-14. Myers replaced him, struck out Caissie, and retired the next hitter for his second save. Duarte (2-0) got the win despite a blown save. He allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings. The win is in the book. The night is not a pitching story.

Conine went 3-for-6 with a double, two runs, and two RBI. Lopez went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, three runs, and two RBI. Pauley went 3-for-6 with two RBI. Mack went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI. Miami used seven relievers. New York used six. The Associated Press recap is a list of names and scores because that is what 15-14 is.

New York is 68-78. Miami is 72-75. A sweep in September does not rewrite either club's season. It does mean the Mets left town with three wins and a game that will show up in every "what was that" clip for a week.

AthX Engine after the baseball
