Guardians 1, Athletics 0: Williams Reclaims the AL Strikeout Lead

Seven scoreless, then a grounder to the pitcher

September 20, 2026 - Cleveland - Gavin Williams waited through a 2-hour, 5-minute rain delay, then struck out nine over seven innings. José Ramírez doubled in the fourth. Jo Adell chopped a single to the pitcher. Ramírez scored. The Cleveland Guardians beat the Athletics 1-0 at Progressive Field.

Cloudy. 68 degrees. Wind 12 mph in from center. First pitch 3:45 p.m. Attendance 26,110. The game lasted 2 hours, 14 minutes. Cleveland had seven hits. Oakland had six.

Williams (14-8) allowed three hits and one walk on 89 pitches. He took the American League strikeout lead at 244, passing Dylan Cease at 239, the MLB recap said. He has a 1.44 ERA in 25 innings over four September starts.

"You can kind of see the panic in a lot of the hitters," Steven Kwan said, per that recap. "They've got to cover a bunch of different shapes and pitches. I think that's when he's at his best, is when the hitters are feeling really uncomfortable."

Gelof and Walton, then nothing

The only real threat came in the second. Zack Gelof singled. Donovan Walton singled. Williams worked around both. Gelof finished 2-for-4. Walton went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts, a day after a 3-for-3 with a homer in a 12-6 loss. Jonah Heim doubled. Henry Bolte singled. None of them scored.

Jack Perkins (3-12) matched him into the fourth. Six innings. Five hits. One earned. Zero walks. Four strikeouts. Eighty pitches. The run was Ramírez doubling and Adell beating a ball back to the mound. That was the night's offense.

Kwan went 3-for-4 and never scored. Ramírez went 2-for-4 with the double, the run, and a stolen base. Chase DeLauter had a hit and a walk. Angel Martínez went 0-for-3 a day after two homers. Patrick Bailey struck out three times. Travis Bazzana was 0-for-3. One run was enough because Williams did not give any back.

"That's the biggest goal," Williams said, per the MLB recap. "Everybody wants to play in October, and that's what we're striving for every year."

Gaddis, Smith, and a one-game lead

Hunter Gaddis allowed two hits in two-thirds of the eighth and still kept it 1-0. Cade Smith finished 1 1/3 with three strikeouts for his 39th save. Twenty pitches. Oakland never tied it.

Manager Stephen Vogt, on Williams: "Just unbelievable. He takes the ball, [throws] seven strong and did his job. He was outstanding yet again today."

Cleveland completed a three-game sweep in its final home game of the regular season. The Guardians are 81-75. The White Sox are 80-76 after an 8-1 later at Rate Field. Chicago owns the head-to-head tiebreaker (7-6), so Cleveland has to finish ahead to win the Central. The MLB recap said the Guardians also hold a three-game cushion on the AL West-leading Rangers (78-78) for the No. 2 seed and the first-round bye.

The homestand was 5-1, including a series win over Chicago. The same recap said Cleveland eclipsed 2 million in attendance at Progressive Field for a third straight season, the club's longest streak since 2000-02. The next game in this ballpark could be October.

Oakland is 61-95. Perkins deserved a better night. Williams did not allow him one.

A sweep in three different games

Friday was Joey Cantillo in bulk and homers from Ramírez and Bazzana after a 3-0 hole, 5-3. Saturday was 15 hits and 12-6. Sunday was one run and a strikeout lead. Vogt liked the mix.

"That's what I love about this team, is we have no idea how we're going to win on any given day," Vogt said, per the MLB recap. "But we're going to find a way to do it."

Six games remain, a road trip through Boston and Kansas City. Sunday asked for one run and seven scoreless. Williams supplied the second part. Adell's chopper supplied the first.
