Brewers 5, Phillies 1: Win No. 100, and Home Field Locked In

Tied into the eighth, then 100

September 24, 2026 - Philadelphia - Sal Frelick doubled Gary Sánchez home in the second. Bryce Harper singled Kyle Schwarber home in the third. 1-1. That score sat through seven. Then Jackson Chourio pinch-hit, walked, stole second, and scored on Jake Bauers's single. Cooper Pratt singled Bauers home. Joey Ortiz singled Sánchez home. 4-1. Chourio homered to left-center in the ninth, his 25th. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 at Citizens Bank Park and reached 100 wins for the first time in franchise history.

Overcast. 66 degrees. Wind 11 mph in from right. First pitch 6:06 p.m. Attendance 37,177. The game lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes. Milwaukee had 11 hits and one error. Philadelphia had four hits and no errors. Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long was ejected by home-plate umpire Dan Merzel in the sixth.

"I think there's definitely an element of validation," Bauers said, per the MLB recap. "We got close last year, and I know a lot of guys in the clubhouse wanted to get to 100 and we didn't get there. It is cool to get there. I've never been on a 100-win team before. Not many people have."

Later Thursday the Dodgers lost, and Milwaukee locked up the No. 1 overall seed and home-field advantage through the postseason. The Brewers own the tiebreaker with Los Angeles. They are 100-59.

Painter through six, Alvarado in the eighth

Andrew Painter threw six innings: five hits, one earned, three walks, eight strikeouts, 93 pitches, 64 strikes. He did not get the decision. Alex McFarlane struck out three in a scoreless seventh and walked two. José Alvarado faced four hitters in the eighth and recorded one out: two hits, three earned, one walk. Chase Shugart inherited two and let both score. Tim Mayza allowed Chourio's homer in the ninth.

Shane Drohan started for Milwaukee and lasted 2 2/3: three hits, one earned, two walks, two strikeouts. Chad Patrick threw 1 1/3 scoreless. Aaron Ashby threw two perfect innings with two strikeouts. JoJo Romero (the win) threw 1 1/3 scoreless. Antonio Senzatela (the save) threw 1 2/3 scoreless.

The MLB recap said Chourio pinch-hit for only the 11th time in his career, in place of designated hitter William Contreras, who was removed after not hustling on a groundout. Chourio walked, stole, scored, then hit. Bauers entered that eighth-inning at-bat 1-for-11 in the series with eight strikeouts. He singled anyway.

Contact over power, and a first-round bye

Frelick's double was the only extra-base hit Milwaukee needed before the eighth. Pratt went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base. Bauers went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Chourio finished 1-for-1 with a walk, a homer, and a steal. Harper went 2-for-4 with the tying RBI. Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a double and the run.

The Brewers, per MLB.com, became the first team in major-league history to win at least 100 games without a winning streak longer than five. They had three separate five-game streaks and never a sixth. They are the first 100-win club since the 2023 Braves, Orioles, and Dodgers, and the first National League Central team to do it since the 2016 Cubs.

Philadelphia is 87-72. A 5-1 home loss with four hits does not end their season. It does drop them two games clear of Arizona for the last Wild Card with three to play, and it handed Milwaukee the round number the clubhouse had been chasing.

The Brewers already had the Central and a first-round bye. Thursday added 100 and, after Los Angeles lost, the best record in baseball to share. Game 1 of the NLDS is Saturday, Oct. 3. Murphy's club has five days to stay in game mode. A 1-1 game into the eighth in Philadelphia was a useful reminder. They still had to manufacture three runs off Alvarado to get the number they wanted.
