Tigers 8, Rockies 1: Jobe's Career-High Eight Ks and a Sweep

Eight strikeouts, and a triple that would have been gone in 24 parks

September 13, 2026 - Detroit - Jackson Jobe struck out eight, a career high, and pitched into the seventh for the first time. Kevin McGonigle tripled off the wall in right-center, a 397-foot drive the Associated Press recap said would have been a home run in 24 of 30 major league parks. The Detroit Tigers beat the Colorado Rockies 8-1 and swept the three-game set.

Partly cloudy, 78 degrees. First pitch 12:10 p.m. Attendance 22,726. The game lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes. Detroit scored in each of the first five innings. Colorado scored in the first and nowhere else.

The Tigers are 70-79 and have won four straight. The Rockies are 55-94. The AP recap said Colorado matched its longest losing streak of the season at seven games, finished a winless six-game trip, and dropped to 5-20 since August 16.

Amador's fourth, Greene's 20th, then the second inning

Adael Amador led off the game with his fourth homer, a fly ball to right off Jobe. 1-0. That was Colorado's competitive moment. Jobe allowed two more hits the rest of the way and walked one.

Colt Keith reached in the bottom of the first. Riley Greene then hit a two-run drive to left, his 20th. The AP recap said it was the third straight season Greene has reached 20 homers. 2-1. Gabriel Hughes (0-8) had already given the lead back. He would not get a third inning.

Max Clark scored on John Peck's single in the second. Zach McKinstry went to third. McGonigle then tripled to center. The umpire reviewed a home-run call. The call on the field was a triple, and it stood. McKinstry scored. Peck scored. 5-1. Hughes: two innings, five hits, five runs, two walks, two strikeouts, 70 pitches. Detroit had a four-run lead and a starter who was missing bats.

Jobe into the seventh, Torkelson in the fifth

Jobe (2-2) went 6 1/3: three hits, one run, one walk, eight strikeouts, 87 pitches. The AP recap said he got 16 swings and misses, and that the 24-year-old has allowed two runs or fewer in five of seven starts since returning from Tommy John surgery in August. Amador's homer was the only run. Mickey Moniak doubled. Vimael Machín had two singles. The rest of Colorado's five hits sat in innings that did not score.

Hao-Yu Lee hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth, McKinstry scoring. Greene singled McGonigle home. 7-1. Spencer Torkelson hit his 23rd in the fifth, a fly ball to left-center. 8-1. Zach Agnos and Nick Frasso absorbed those innings. Jimmy Herget threw two scoreless later. None of it changed the fact that Hughes had already handed Detroit a 5-1 lead before the third inning started.

Greene finished 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. McGonigle went 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, a walk, and a run. Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a homer. Peck had a hit, a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI. Clark walked, singled, stole a base, and scored. Keith doubled and scored. Lee drove in a run without a hit. Detroit left seven on and still scored eight. Eight hits, five of them for extra bases, will do that.

Jaden Hill threw a scoreless eighth. None of it threatened an 8-1. The Rockies put a leadoff homer on the board and then spent the next eight innings watching Jobe miss bats.

A sweep, a winless trip, and Toronto on Monday

Yilber Díaz and Brant Hurter finished the last 2 2/3 without a run. Colorado went quietly after Amador. Five hits, five left on, one run. The AP recap said the Rockies have lost 94 or more games in five straight seasons. Sunday made it official for 2026.

Monday is Troy Melton (8-4, 2.42) at Toronto against José Soriano (12-7, 3.48), the AP recap said. Colorado goes home to face San Diego, Tomoyuki Sugano (12-9, 5.30) starting. Detroit is still under .500. A four-game winning streak and a sweep of a last-place club is how a 70-79 team spends September without pretending it is something else.
