MLB Trade Deadline Update (July 20): Every Deal From July 13–20

MLB trade deadline July 20 2026 completed deals update for AthX at getathx.com

Quick takeaway: The 2026 MLB trade deadline is still Monday, August 3, at 6 p.m. ET. Between July 13 and July 20, five deals actually hit the wire. Contenders stocked pitching depth (Brewers, Cubs, Dodgers). Sellers cleared DFAs and IL projects (Athletics, Rockies, Nationals). On AthX, none of that reprints a price by itself. What matters is whether the move changes role, park, or innings, then how that shows up in AthX Engine fantasy points and dynamic pricing.

This replaces the rumor-first framing of our earlier July 20 draft with a completed-trade tracker, then a short look at what could still move. Framework checklist remains in the original deadline guide.

Trade tracker (July 13–20, 2026)

DateTeamsSummary
July 15Astros → BrewersRHP Lance McCullers Jr., LHP Colton Gordon, cash for Minors OF Jadyn Fielder (Brewers absorb ~$2.5M of McCullers)
July 17Nationals → PiratesOF Robert Hassell III for cash or a PTBNL
July 17Rays → CardinalsRHP Trey Pooser (PTBNL completing the June Chris Roycroft deal)
July 18Athletics → CubsRHP Aaron Civale, cash for Minors RHP Aiden Moffett
July 20Rockies → DodgersRHP Seth Halvorsen for Minors RHP Nick Frasso and Minors OF Landyn Vidourek

Just outside this window (July 10–11, eve of the draft): White Sox sent INF Jacob Gonzalez and LHP Brandon Eisert to Pittsburgh for LHP Jaden Woods and Competitive Balance pick No. 34. Useful context for Pittsburgh's early buy lean; not counted in the July 13–20 total.

July 15: Brewers add McCullers and Gordon from Houston

The deal: Milwaukee acquired former All-Star Lance McCullers Jr., lefty Colton Gordon, and cash from Houston for Low-A outfielder Jadyn Fielder (son of Prince Fielder). The Brewers absorbed roughly $2.5 million of McCullers' remaining salary. McCullers waived his 10-and-5 rights. Milwaukee opened a 40-man spot by moving LHP Rob Zastryzny to the 60-day IL. Reported and confirmed via MLB.com and MLB Trade Rumors.

Why it happened: Milwaukee entered the second half with rotation stress (Brandon Woodruff on the 60-day IL, Kyle Harrison forearm tightness, Jacob Misiorowski managed for arm fatigue). Gordon gives optionable depth. McCullers is a postseason-pedigree upside play still rehabbing a rotator-cuff impingement. Houston clears money and roster noise while hunting bats before August 3.

AthX angle: McCullers' AthX Engine pitching FP only matters once he is healthy and slotted. Gordon's path is Triple-A to MLB innings if Milwaukee keeps scratching starters. Brewers team shares price a club that just overtook the Dodgers for baseball's best record (Monday board). Do not pay championship prices for an IL arm until the Engine sees starts.

July 17: Pirates take a flier on Hassell III

The deal: Pittsburgh acquired OF Robert Hassell III from Washington for cash or a player to be named later. Hassell had been designated, cleared waivers, and outrighted, so he does not cost a 40-man spot. Confirmed via NBC Sports / AP and MLB Trade Rumors.

Why it happened: Once a top-40 Pipeline name (and part of the Juan Soto package to San Diego), Hassell never stuck. Pittsburgh's position-player IL list has been brutal (Oneil Cruz, Konnor Griffin, Spencer Horwitz, Endy Rodríguez). Low risk, zero roster tax.

AthX angle: Speculative share only if Hassell earns big-league at-bats. Until then, this is farm depth. Watch Pittsburgh's buy/sell lean more than Hassell's name.

---

July 17: Cardinals land Pooser as Rays PTBNL

The deal: St. Louis announced Minors RHP Trey Pooser from Tampa Bay as the player to be named later from last month's swap that sent middle reliever Chris Roycroft to the Rays (MLB Trade Rumors).

Why it happened: Housekeeping on a prior trade. Pooser, a 2024 10th-round Kentucky product, has worked mostly as an A-ball reliever.

AthX angle: No listed AthX impact. Logged here so the July 13–20 wire is complete.

---

July 18: Cubs reunite with Civale after A's DFA

The deal: Chicago acquired RHP Aaron Civale and cash from the Athletics for Minors RHP Aiden Moffett. Oakland had designated Civale on July 15. Confirmed via MLB.com.

Why it happened: Civale signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Oakland, then posted a 5.42 ERA over 74 2/3 innings (16 games, 15 starts) with a shoulder IL stint. The A's were already selling. The Cubs, chewed up by pitching injuries (Cade Horton out for the year; Taillon, Cabrera, Steele, and others in various stages), grabbed familiar length after Civale's strong late-2025 bullpen run in Chicago.

AthX angle: Role is the whole story. Length arm on a Wild Card club can bank AthX Engine pitching FP even without ace stuff. Moffett is organizational depth for Oakland. Civale's share is a buy-the-opportunity trade, not a buy-the-ERA trade. Confirm the role in-app before you size it.

July 20: Dodgers add Halvorsen from Colorado

The deal: Los Angeles acquired RHP Seth Halvorsen for Minors RHP Nick Frasso and Minors OF Landyn Vidourek. Halvorsen is finishing a rehab assignment for shoulder inflammation. Confirmed via MLB Trade Rumors and FOX Sports.

Why it happened: Contenders always shop controllable velocity. Halvorsen throws near 100 mph with five-plus years of control and options remaining. Colorado GM Josh Byrnes knows the Dodgers system from his decade in L.A. and flipped an injured high-octane arm for a former top-100 arm (Frasso) plus a toolsy 2025 third-round OF (Vidourek).

AthX angle: Halvorsen is a development project until he is healthy and in Dodgers leverage. Frasso could see MLB innings in Colorado sooner. Seller-to-buyer bullpen moves are classic AthX role trades: Engine FP follows usage, not the press release.

What still might move (speculation)

These are not completed deals. Treat them as watchlist items.

  • Tarik Skubal: Still the market's gravitational center. Detroit sits in Dayn Perry's "who knows" lane: under .500, yet close enough in the AL wild-card mush to keep him. Every Tigers win (extras at Wrigley, shutout in Anaheim) makes a sale harder.
  • Freddy Peralta and Mets arms: New York is in full sell mode. Peralta's return to Milwaukee ended 8-3 the wrong way (recap). Contenders will keep calling. Clay Holmes rehab has drawn White Sox interest per deadline trackers.
  • Reds rentals: Cincinnati is expected to move expiring deals (Brady Singer, Eugenio Suárez, Nathaniel Lowe, Tyler Stephenson) without a full fire sale, per reporting summarized by FOX's deadline tracker.
  • Athletics bats for arms: After Civale, clubs are still asking about Oakland outfield depth (Tyler Soderstrom, Lawrence Butler, Henry Bolte).
  • Nationals' Luis García Jr.: Breakout power bat under control for 2027. Washington can sell or ride a wild-card push.
  • Buyers still shopping: Braves (rotation/bullpen/bats), Cubs (more pitching), Dodgers (already added Halvorsen), Phillies, and a Red Sox club flipped toward buying after a historic win streak.
