The lead
May 14, 2026 - Flushing - The New York Mets finished a three-game sweep of Detroit with a lineup that kept finding new heroes. Rookie A.J. Ewing hit his first big league home run—a 405-foot shot to lead off the third—and New York beat the Detroit Tigers 9-4 at Citi Field, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.
It was the Mets’ first sweep since taking three straight from Philadelphia in August, according to AP.
How the game turned
Gage Workman gave Detroit a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the first off Nolan McLean (2-2), but the Mets answered in layers. Ewing was 3-for-9 with three RBIs and four walks in the series after his promotion Tuesday, per AP.
Brett Baty hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Juan Soto delivered a tie-breaking RBI single off Tyler Holton in the fifth, one pitch before Mark Vientos’ two-run shot. Hayden Senger added a safety squeeze in the sixth, and Soto and Marcus Semien went deep in the seventh and eighth.
Pitching and matchup notes
McLean allowed six hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out seven, ending a six-start winless streak. Keider Montero (2-3) took the loss with four runs in 4⅔ innings.
Replay loomed large: Tigers manager A.J. Hinch was ejected after a review confirmed Workman was out at third on Zach McKinstry’s bloop in the fourth. The Mets successfully challenged a safe call on McLean’s pickoff of Wenceel Pérez in the fifth and a caught-stealing call on Carson Benge just before Soto’s go-ahead hit, per AP.
Bats that changed the board
Beyond Ewing’s breakthrough, the Mets spread damage: Vientos and Soto each homered, Semien added another, and Dillon Dingler homered in the eighth for Detroit’s late consolation.
AthX Engine fantasy angle
New York’s 17 AthX Engine team FP ranked second among clubs on May 14, with McLean’s 24 pitching FP and Ewing’s 12 hitting FP anchoring the daily leaderboard. Multi-homer afternoons from the middle of the order still move team totals even when the starter gives up an early blast. AthX Engine differs from dynamic pricing.
What comes next
Detroit opens a homestand against Toronto on Friday. The Mets host the Yankees in the Subway Series with Clay Holmes opposing Cam Schlittler, per AP.
