Mets 9, Marlins 4: Ewing's 3 Hits, 3 RBI Lead New York in Miami

Miami led for about 15 minutes

September 7, 2026 - Miami - Graham Pauley hit a three-run homer in the second, and loanDepot park had a 4-3 lead with the roof closed. The New York Mets tied it in the third, took the lead in the fourth, and left town with a 9-4 win that never felt close after A.J. Ewing started driving in runs in bunches.

Ewing went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. The Associated Press recap led with the rookie, and the box score backed it up. New York scored two in the first on an error-filled sequence, one in the second, three in the fourth, and two more in the sixth. Miami's four runs were the second inning and nothing else.

The second inning, then the correction

The Mets were already up 3-0 when Javier Sanoja tripled Jakob Marsee home and Pauley followed with his third homer of the year, a fly ball to right that scored Sanoja and Owen Caissie. 4-3, Marlins. Jonah Tong had walked into a mess in his fifth inning of work still ahead of him.

Francisco Alvarez singled Marcus Semien home in the third. Tie game. Then the fourth: Francisco Lindor scored on a Bo Bichette single, and Ewing doubled Juan Soto and Carson Benge home. 7-4. The inning that was supposed to belong to Miami was a one-inning sample.

Semien doubled Benge home in the sixth. Ewing singled Semien home. 9-4. That was the last run of the night. Nick Nick Morabito had already singled Brett Baty home in the second for the 3-0 lead Miami briefly erased. Morabito finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Soto went 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs. Lindor went 2-for-6 with a run and three strikeouts. Bichette was 2-for-5 with an RBI. The Mets used the whole card. They also used Miami's defense: Soto scored the first run on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by Sanoja, and a second first-inning run came home on an error during Ewing's groundout.

Tong got the win. Pérez took the loss.

Tong lasted five innings: four hits, four runs, one walk, seven strikeouts, 87 pitches. All four runs came in that second inning. He still left with the lead after the Mets' fourth, and the bullpen kept it there. Dedniel Núñez, Chris Devenski, Daniel Duarte, and Austin Warren each threw a scoreless inning. Miami did not score after the second.

Eury Pérez went four innings, five earned runs, five strikeouts, three walks, 92 pitches. He took the loss. Cade Gibson threw a scoreless fifth. Josh Ekness allowed the two sixth-inning runs. Bradley Blalock threw three scoreless innings of relief, which was the cleanest Miami pitching of the night and also too late.

Pauley's homer was the Marlins' loudest swing. Sanoja's triple was the setup. After that, New York's lineup treated Pérez and the middle of Miami's bullpen like a road game they had already decided to finish.

The Mets are 66-78. The Marlins are 72-73. This was not a playoff game. It was a Monday in Miami where the visiting club scored nine and the home club scored four, all of them before the third inning was over on the other side.

loanDepot park had the roof closed and no wind. Pérez threw 92 pitches to get 12 outs. Tong threw 87 to get 15 and still had to sit through Pauley's homer. The difference was the fourth and the sixth: Ewing's double with Soto and Benge on, then Semien's double and Ewing's single. New York kept finding extra bases. Miami's four runs stayed in the second.

Benge scored twice, walked, and stole a base. Alvarez drove in the tying run. Lindor reached twice and scored. The Mets' 9-4 was not a three-run homer night. It was traffic, extra bases, and a bullpen that did not give Miami a second look.
