Two hits in seven innings. Then Young kept finding grass.
August 29, 2026 - New York - Nolan McLean gave Houston two hits in seven innings. One run scored. None of it was earned. Ninety-three pitches, four strikeouts, three walks. He left with a 4-1 lead and his 10th win.
Jared Young went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. The New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 6-2 at Citi Field.
Houston opened with a starter who did not last an inning. McLean lasted seven.
Sousa lasted two-thirds. Javier inherited the mess.
Bennett Sousa walked two and allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning. Jeremy Peña doubled. Yordan Alvarez lifted a sacrifice fly. 1-0 Astros.
New York tied it before the first inning ended. Francisco Lindor doubled. Young singled him home with Carson Benge on second.
Cristian Javier (1-5) took over and worked 4 1/3 innings, six hits, three runs. The fifth is where it broke. Lindor scored on Juan Soto's single. Young tripled to right, Soto and Benge scoring. 4-1. McLean had already settled in. Houston's two hits through seven were Peña's double and not much else that traveled.
Alvarez homered in the eighth, 436 feet to right-center, his 37th, off Daniel Duarte. 4-2. Francisco Alvarez answered with a two-run double that scored Young and Marcus Semien. 6-2. Kodai Senga threw a scoreless ninth.
McLean (10-8) lowered his ERA to 3.06. Javier's sits at 6.45. One of those lines is a rotation piece. The other is a problem Houston has not solved.

What's next
The Mets are 61-75 and still taking games when McLean goes seven. Houston is 68-68 and starting series with a two-thirds inning. Alvarez did his part. The first inning around him did not.
