Marlins 4, Mets 1: Meyer One-Hits New York as Hicks Homers Twice

The lead

May 23, 2026 - Miami - The Miami Marlins limited the New York Mets to one run and three hits for the second straight game, winning 4-1 at loanDepot park behind Max Meyer's seven shutout innings of one-hit ball and Liam Hicks's first career multi-homer game, per MLB.com and the Associated Press recap on TSN.

Meyer (5-0) struck out eight, walked three, and hit a batter while lowering his ERA to 2.5210th lowest among National League starters. He remains the only major leaguer with at least eight starts and zero losses this season, per MLB.com.

How the game turned

Owen Caissie's two-run double in the second put Miami ahead 2-0 after Jakob Marsee walked and Connor Norby singled. Mark Vientos's opposite-field single in the second was the only hit Meyer allowed; the Mets never put a runner in scoring position against him.

Hicks homered off Freddy Peralta (3-4) in the third and again in the fifth for his 11th and 12th homers of the season, extending the lead to 4-0. New York's offense finally broke through in the ninth when Tyrone Taylor doubled and Vientos singled home the Mets' first run since Juan Soto's solo homer Friday—ending a 16-inning scoreless drought.

Pitching and matchup notes

Anthony Bender worked 1⅓ scoreless innings after Meyer departed, and Andrew Nardi closed despite allowing the late run. Peralta pitched well after the second—holding Miami to one hit over his final four innings—but the early damage stuck.

AthX Engine logged Meyer at 29 pitching FP and Hicks at 12 hitting FP, with Miami at 10 team FP on a night the Marlins won with pitching and complementary power rather than a blowout.

Bats that changed the board

Hicks supplied the highlight tape with two homers; Caissie drove in two with the second-inning double past a diving Vientos. Otto López doubled in the third and leads the majors with 69 hits, per AP—though Meyer kept the rest of the Mets lineup from building on that contact.

For New York, the punchless night was the 14th time the Mets have scored one run or fewer and their sixth shutout of the season.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

Seven scoreless with one hit is the AthX Engine ceiling for a starter who works around traffic—Meyer's 29 FP led all but one arm on the slate. Daily fantasy scoring does not automatically move share prices; see dynamic pricing for how markets react separately.

What comes next

The Mets look to avoid a sweep Sunday at 1:40 p.m. EDT, per AP scheduling notes.
