Guardians 9, White Sox 3: Ramírez Forced a Game 4

The 0-2 curveball that quieted Rate Field.

October 7, 2026 - Chicago - José Ramírez was down 0-2 with two on and two out in the eighth. The Cleveland Guardians led by two. The Rate Field crowd still thought it had a chance. Then Ramírez sliced David Sandlin's curveball into left, the MLB recap said, far enough from Randal Grichuk that a dive did not matter. Travis Bazzana scored. Patrick Bailey scored. 7-3.

The Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 9-3 in American League Division Series Game 3 and forced a Game 4 on Thursday. Ramírez went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI, two runs, a walk, and a stolen base. He also snared Miguel Vargas's liner in the sixth with the bases loaded. The Associated Press recap on ESPN called it the first time Cleveland had two triples in a postseason game.

Sunny. 75 degrees. Wind 6 mph, left to right. First pitch 4:07 p.m. ET. Attendance 40,590. The game lasted 3 hours, 16 minutes. Chicago had won its first four playoff games. This was the franchise's first home postseason game since 2021. The building was loud until it was not.

Hudson's third. Adell's first-base line.

Chicago scored first. Kyle Teel doubled Sam Antonacci home with one out in the first. Daniel Espino walked into traffic and struck out Chase Meidroth. Foster Griffin then froze Tristan Peters looking with runners at second and third. The 1-0 lead lasted two innings.

Sean Newcomb threw two scoreless. Bryan Hudson took the third. Bazzana walked. Steven Kwan singled him home. 1-1. Hagen Smith inherited a two-out, bases-loaded mess. Jo Adell grounded a high fastball down the first-base line, the AP recap said. Kwan scored. Ramírez scored. Chase DeLauter scored. 4-1. Adell's triple was his second of the series after an RBI triple in Game 2. He had one triple in each of the last two regular seasons.

Hudson's line was a third of an inning: two hits, three earned, one walk, the loss. The third inning was the night Chicago's bullpen stopped looking like the group that had gotten the club here.

Seven punchouts, then Ramírez on the dirt.

Griffin threw 2 2/3 innings: two hits, one earned, no walks, seven strikeouts, the win. ESPN said it was a franchise record for a Cleveland reliever. The first-inning escape was the one that mattered. The rest of his look was the same idea: swing and miss, then hand it off.

Ramírez doubled off Noah Schultz in the fifth, 106.5 mph, the MLB recap said. He stole third. DeLauter grounded to Meidroth. By the time the second baseman was ready to throw, Ramírez was halfway home. He dove in ahead of the tag. 5-2. "I'm never like, 'Oh my gosh, that was surprising,'" catcher Austin Hedges told MLB.com. "I'm like, 'Yeah, this is José Ramírez.'"

Chicago got one back in the fourth on Peters's double, Chase Meidroth scoring. 4-2. The sixth loaded the bases on a walk, two hit batters, and a single. Antonacci was hit with the bases full, Braden Montgomery scoring. 5-3. Vargas then lined to Ramírez. The slide to his left ended the inning. Ramírez told MLB.com it felt like a shift. The last two games had not gone Cleveland's way. After that play, he said, it was their game to win.

Two more in the ninth. Nineteen strikeouts for Chicago.

Angel Genao doubled Nathaniel Lowe home in the ninth. Petey Halpin scored on Brayan Rocchio's popup single to left. 9-3. Bailey, Rocchio, Adell, and Ramírez each had two of Cleveland's 11 hits. ESPN noted Cleveland had managed three runs and seven hits in the first two games combined.

Chicago struck out 19 times and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position, the AP recap said. Cade Smith threw two hitless innings with five strikeouts. Tim Herrin struck out the side in the seventh. Shawn Armstrong and Hunter Gaddis each picked up a hold. The White Sox never got the inning they needed after Vargas's liner.

Ramírez was 0-for-6 with two walks in the first two games of the series. Wednesday he hit a 107.9 mph lineout in the first, the second-hardest ball he has had since June surgery for a left hamate fracture, the MLB recap said. Manager Stephen Vogt told MLB.com you knew he was here after that swing. The rest of the afternoon was the proof.

Messick on Thursday. Chicago still leads 2-1.

Game 4 is Thursday at Rate Field. ESPN listed Parker Messick for Cleveland. Messick allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings in Game 1. Chicago had not named a pitcher before Wednesday's game. Hagen Smith started Game 1 with 2 2/3 hitless innings.

The MLB recap noted that teams which lose the first two of a best-of-five and win Game 3 have forced a Game 5 in 18 of 39 cases (46%) entering 2026. They have won the series 10 of 39 times (26%). Ramírez, through interpreter Agustin Rivero, put it simpler: come back tomorrow, win one more, keep going.

Chicago still leads 2-1. Cleveland is still alive because Ramírez would not let the eighth stay quiet.
