Giants 9, Mets 5: Devers and Koss Each Homer Twice at Citi Field

Two Giants, four homers, one Citi Field night

September 5, 2026 - New York - Rafael Devers and Christian Koss each went deep twice Saturday, and the San Francisco Giants beat the New York Mets 9-5 at Citi Field.

San Francisco hit six homers in all. Grant McCray and Osleivis Basabe added the other two. That was one short of the club's season high, set in an 18-3 rout of the Cubs on June 5. The Mets got a two-run homer from A.J. Ewing and a late double from Brett Baty. They never caught the middle innings.

Devers keeps doing 2004 Bonds math

Devers went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI. It was his third two-homer game this season and the 23rd of his career. He now has 35 home runs, the most by a Giant since Barry Bonds hit 45 in 2004.

Friday he had a homer, two doubles, and five RBI in a 10-6 loss. Over his last 13 games he is batting .420 (21-for-50) with nine homers and 21 RBI. That is not a hot week. That is a month of a different sport.

Koss entered Saturday with four homers in 124 big league games. He left with six. First career two-homer game. He nearly had a third in the ninth. Juan Soto climbed the left-field wall and took it back.

This is the second time this season at least two Giants have hit two homers in the same game. Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Casey Schmitt each went deep twice in that June 5 blowout in Chicago. It is the first season since 1958 in which San Francisco has had two such games. Willie Mays and Daryl Spencer did it in consecutive games against the Dodgers on May 12-13 that year.

Molina's one-hit five, Thornton's six-run five

Anthony Molina (3-0) threw five innings and allowed one hit. That hit was Ewing's two-run homer in the second, Ewing's first since July 8. Molina struck out six and walked one on 87 pitches. The two runs on the homer were unearned. The Giants committed the game's only error.

Zac Thornton (3-5) lasted five innings, seven hits, six earned, one walk, six strikeouts, four homers, 82 pitches. Career high in runs allowed. Four of San Francisco's six homers came on his watch. When a rookie left-hander leaves four balls in the seats at Citi Field, the rest of the night is a chase.

The Giants scored one in the first, two in the third, three in the fifth, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth. New York answered with two in the second, one in the seventh, and two in the ninth. Baty walked with the bases loaded in the seventh and doubled in two in the ninth. Jared Young had two hits and scored twice. Marcus Semien reached twice. It was not enough against a lineup that kept finding the seats.

Six homers and one leaping catch

McCray went 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs. Basabe's two-run shot was the fourth San Francisco homer. Bryce Eldridge doubled and walked. Jonah Cox singled and scored. The Giants left one runner on base all night. When you hit six homers, you do not need traffic.

Soto's ninth-inning robbery of Koss was the Mets' cleanest defensive moment. The rest of the night belonged to San Francisco's bats and Molina's quiet five innings. Chris Devenski threw two scoreless for New York after Thornton. The eighth and ninth belonged to the Giants again.

San Francisco is 59-84. The Mets are 64-78. Neither club is playing for October. Saturday still had a shape: two hitters who would not stop, a starter who needed one pitch back, and a left-field wall that finally said no.

César Perdomo (0-0, 2.25) was set to make his first career start Sunday against Christian Scott (4-4, 3.80), pitching the finale on eight days' rest.

AthX Engine put the Giants at 16 team fantasy points, tied with Colorado for Saturday's best team score. Koss and Devers each scored 13 hitting FP, second and third on the daily hitter board behind only Riley Greene. Molina had 19 pitching FP. The Mets sat at 0 team FP. Fantasy points grade the box score. Share price is a different number. See dynamic pricing if you want that distinction in one place.
