Series split energy, Wrigley edition
July 21, 2026 – Chicago – Monday belonged to Dillon Dingler in extras. Tuesday belonged to David Peterson and a Cubs lineup that would not stop.
David Peterson worked 6 2/3, allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out four. Pete Crow-Armstrong stacked hitting FP. And the Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 11-2, per CBS Sports.
Framber Valdez (5-7) took the loss. Dingler's homer was Detroit's loudest answer. Not enough.
Depth arm, contender night
Peterson, acquired from the Mets earlier this summer, keeps looking like the kind of length add Jed Hoyer wanted alongside Aaron Civale. Eleven runs and 11 hits later, Chicago had the series even and another AthX Engine pitching board near the top of the card.
AthX Engine angle
Cubs 23 team FP. Peterson 22.66 pitching FP. Crow-Armstrong 10 hitting FP. Dingler still posted 10 FP in a loss. Engine grades the night; dynamic pricing grades Detroit's Skubal deadline math.
What comes next
Chicago keeps buying arms. Detroit keeps winning enough to make selling the ace painful.
