One run, two starters, and a fly ball Baltimore never saw
September 19, 2026 - Baltimore - Rece Hinds lost Joey Ortiz's fly ball in the sun. Ortiz ended up on third. Gary Sánchez grounded him home. That was the only run of the afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 at Camden Yards, and Trevor Rogers still threw eight innings with 10 strikeouts and took the loss.
Cloudy. 77 degrees. Wind 7 mph right to left. First pitch 4:05 p.m. Attendance 32,663. The game lasted 2 hours, 17 minutes. Milwaukee had three hits. Baltimore had four. One run decided a night two starting pitchers both deserved.
Robert Gasser said, per the MLB recap: "I knew the bullpen needed some help. It's not at the forefront of my mind, but at the end of the day, it's, 'Let's get outs one pitch at a time.' I'm glad it worked out that way."
Gasser's 107, and a double play that kept it 1-0
Gasser (5-5) threw seven scoreless innings. Three hits. Three walks. Two strikeouts. A career-high 107 pitches, the MLB recap said. The Orioles loaded the bases in the sixth and he got a double play. They put the tying run on second in the seventh and he stranded it. Abner Uribe threw a scoreless eighth. Aaron Ashby struck out the last batter of the ninth for his third save.
The bullpen had covered 7 2/3 innings Friday, the MLB recap said. Saturday needed a starter who could finish seven. Gasser did that against a right-handed Baltimore order. Manager Pat Murphy, per that recap: "Well, he'll definitely be on the postseason roster. You can bet on that. With his role and the way things are going on, he's got a really good chance to pitch for us."
Ortiz's triple was the whole offense. Sánchez's groundout was the RBI. William Contreras had the other hit. Jackson Chourio went 0-for-4. Andrew Vaughn went 0-for-3. Three hits, one run, two men left on. That is enough when the other club does not score.
Rogers's 10 strikeouts on the wrong side of 1-0
Rogers (10-11) threw eight innings. Three hits. One earned. One walk. Ten strikeouts. Ninety-nine pitches. The run was the only one he allowed, and it started with a fly Hinds never caught. Alex Hoppe threw a clean ninth. None of that put a zero in the Milwaukee column. The MLB recap logged Rogers's 10th strikeout as one of the day's highlights. It still sat on a loss.
Gunnar Henderson doubled. Rece Hinds doubled and walked. Leody Taveras and Jeremiah Jackson singled. Pete Alonso went 0-for-3. Christian Encarnacion-Strand went 0-for-4. Coby Mayo walked and did not score. Four hits, six left on, and a 1-0 that will sit on Rogers's card as a loss.
The MLB recap spent as much time on Milwaukee's pitching meeting as on the game. Murphy and his staff talked for more than an hour about Dustin May's recent results, Kyle Harrison's slump, and which young starters can work October innings. Gasser is the name that does not need solving. His ERA over his last five outings is 1.71, that recap said, and he is now in the conversation behind Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson.
"We're throwing things out there, checking on things, trying to find solutions for little nuances," Murphy said, per the MLB recap.
A franchise-record 97, and two more for a bye
Milwaukee is 97-58. The MLB recap said the win matched the franchise record for victories with seven games to go, and that any combination of two more Brewers wins or Braves losses secures a first-round bye after Atlanta beat Houston later Saturday. That is the week in front of them. Tuesday starts a three-game set in Philadelphia. Henderson is not scheduled until Wednesday, Murphy said.
Baltimore is 75-80. Rogers's 10-strikeout night is the piece that should travel. The rest is a lineup that put four hits on a pitcher who needed 107 pitches to get 21 outs and still could not cash the sixth or the seventh.
Gasser, per the MLB recap, kept talking about the changeup when his command started to wander. He did not talk about October. Murphy already had.
