The lead
May 20, 2026 - Miami - The Atlanta Braves reclaimed the NL East lead with a 9-1 rout of the Miami Marlins at loanDepot park, riding Chris Sale's seven-inning gem and three-run homers from Austin Riley and Dominic Smith, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.
Sale allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts, snapping a two-start skid and finally beating Miami after entering 0-2 with a 5.30 ERA against the Marlins in his career, AP noted. Riley's 415-foot blast off Janson Junk ended an 0-for-8 series start; Smith's 389-foot shot to center capped a 12-pitch at-bat and put the game out of reach.
How the game turned
Miami grabbed a 1-0 lead when Xavier Edwards walked, advanced, and scored on Heriberto Hernández's sacrifice fly. Sale did not allow a hit over his final three innings after that early traffic.
Riley's third-inning homer flipped the score to 3-1. Atlanta added two more in the sixth on singles from Ronald Acuña Jr., Michael Harris II, Matt Olson, and Ozzie Albies to make it 5-1 before Smith's three-run shot in the seventh.
Pitching and matchup notes
Junk allowed eight hits and three strikeouts over five innings. Atlanta's bullpen finished without drama as the NL-leading Braves improved to 34-16.
AthX Engine graded Sale at 27 pitching FP—second on the daily arm board—and tagged Atlanta at 20 team FP, Wednesday's top club mark, with Riley adding 8 hitting FP.
Bats that changed the board
Smith reached again in the eighth on a triple and scored on a throwing error. Pinch-hitter Eli White, back from concussion protocol, doubled in the ninth against position player Javier Sanoja.
AthX Engine fantasy angle
Ace length plus multi-homer support is the classic AthX Engine team-night formula: Sale's 27 pitching FP and spread-out hitting FP lifted the Braves without requiring a single 15 FP bat. Daily scoring stays separate from dynamic pricing.
What comes next
Atlanta closes the series Thursday with Spencer Schwellenbach against Sandy Alcantara per AP's probables; Miami needs cleaner middle-inning pitching after back-to-back blowouts in the division race.
