Blue Jays 9, Royals 2: Kirk, Clement, and Springer Push Toronto Back to .500

Four in the first, and .500 before midnight

September 4, 2026 - Kansas City - Daniel Lynch IV spent the first inning watching the Toronto Blue Jays stack hits. Alejandro Kirk singled in a run. Kazuma Okamoto singled in another. Ernie Clement doubled in two more. Toronto led 4-0, and the rest of the night was a chase the Kansas City Royals never won.

The Blue Jays beat Kansas City 9-2. They are 71-71. That is .500 for the first time since they were 39-39 on June 22. They were 10 games under on July 28. They have won six of their last seven.

A September road win in Missouri should not feel like a milestone. For this club, it does.

Witt answers. Then Kirk answers back.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit his 17th homer in the bottom of the first. 4-1. The Royals had their noise. They did not get another run until the ninth.

Kirk doubled in a run in the second. The four-run cushion was back. Kirk finished 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run. Clement went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run. George Springer later doubled in two more. That is three veterans driving in two apiece, which is how a lineup that spent half the summer underwater gets back to even.

Lynch recovered enough to retire his last nine batters. He still left with five runs on seven hits in five innings and one walk. The early damage was the game.

Taillon lasted two. The bullpen lasted seven.

Jameson Taillon was making his first appearance since August 10, when Toronto put him on the injured list with right forearm tendinitis. He allowed Witt's homer, two hits, and one run in two innings. Then he left with right elbow discomfort.

That is the sentence that will follow this win around. Toronto can enjoy 71-71. It also has to find out what the elbow says tomorrow.

Joe Mantiply took over and threw two scoreless innings for the win, his second without a loss. Brendon Little and Braydon Fisher each added a clean frame. Michael Lorenzen finished the last three innings and recorded his first save.

Four relievers, seven innings, one run, four hits. Kansas City's second through eighth innings produced almost nothing. Salvador Perez had two singles. Carter Jensen doubled. Vinnie Pasquantino waited until the ninth.

Straw's bunt, Springer's gap double

Toronto added three in the sixth. Clement was on. Myles Straw dropped a sacrifice bunt that scored him. Springer then doubled into the gap in right-center and drove in two. 8-1.

Straw finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run besides the bunt. Brett Bateman scored twice. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-4 and scored. The Blue Jays had 13 hits and left seven on base, which is a sloppy way of saying they kept putting people on and kept cashing them.

Each team hit a solo homer in the ninth. Sean Keys, in his only at-bat, hit his second of the season for Toronto. Pasquantino hit his 10th for Kansas City. 9-2. The extras did not change the shape of the night.

What .500 actually means here

Toronto is the defending American League champion, and it spent two months looking like a club that had misplaced the year. A 21-game climb from 10 under to even is not a playoff clinch. It is proof the roster still has a pulse in September.

Kansas City is 63-79. Witt and Pasquantino can still ruin a night. They could not ruin this one after the first inning. Lynch's last nine outs were real. The first inning was more real.

Max Scherzer (2-7, 6.16) starts Saturday against Seth Lugo (6-8, 5.03). If Taillon's elbow is a longer story, that Saturday start suddenly carries more of the weekend.
