Yankees 16, Red Sox 1: Wells Homers Twice in a Nine-Run Eighth

Four zeroes, then the Bronx stopped being polite

August 30, 2026 – Bronx – Ranger Suárez had a scoreless game through four. Will Warren had the same. Yankee Stadium was still waiting on a series finale between clubs that have spent August staring at the same wild-card math.

The fifth inning ended that wait. The eighth buried it. The New York Yankees scored 16. The Boston Red Sox scored 1. New York finished with 18 hits, its most runs of the season, and a 16-1 win that clinched the season series.

Austin Wells homered twice in the eighth. That is the clip. The game had already turned before he took his first swing of that inning.

Rafaela's glove, then five in the fifth

Boston challenged a sinking liner off Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fifth. Ceddanne Rafaela thought he had caught it. The call on the field was a trap, a hit, and the review stood. Two batters later, Paul Goldschmidt singled to center and scored José Caballero and Chisholm. 2-0.

Heliot Ramos then hit a fly ball to left, his 10th homer of the year, scoring Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. 5-0. First homer since the Yankees got him from San Francisco. First multi-hit game in pinstripes. He had entered the day 7-for-59 in 20 games with New York. One swing made the first 20 games a footnote.

Suárez lasted 5 1/3 innings, nine hits, six earned, two walks, two strikeouts. Season highs in runs and hits. Warren had already handed him a lead that did not need protecting, and then New York kept adding anyway.

Wells hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Caballero scored again. 6-0. Amed Rosario singled home Spencer Jones in the seventh. 7-0. Boston's only run came in the eighth, when Trevor Story scored on Nick Sogard's single to right. Warren had finished seven. The one earned run sat on his line. Tim Hill threw the last two innings and did not give any of it back.

Nine in the eighth, two of them from Wells

The eighth was not a rally. It was a pile-on. Wells homered to right off Jovani Morán, scoring Chisholm with him. 9-1. Goldschmidt homered to right, his 18th. 10-1. Trent Grisham hit a sacrifice fly. Jones scored. 11-1.

Andruw Monasterio, an infielder, came in to throw. Caballero homered to left, his 13th, scoring Luis García Jr. and Rosario. 14-1. Wells went deep again, this time to right-center, his 10th, with Chisholm scoring ahead of him. 16-1. Two homers in one inning. Five RBI on the day. The Associated Press noted it was the seventh time a Yankee had homered twice in an inning, and that Wells was the first to do it since Gleyber Torres in 2022.

Chisholm went 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs, and two stolen bases. Caballero started at shortstop with George Lombard Jr. dealing with right knee discomfort and went 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI, and three runs. Goldschmidt went 3-for-6 with a homer and three RBI. Ramos went 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI. Bellinger had two hits. The lineup did not need a clean ninth. It had already used the eighth.

Warren (9-6) struck out seven, walked one, and allowed six hits. Hill closed the last two. Boston got two hits apiece from Roman Anthony, Story, and Wilyer Abreu and still left with a 1. Monasterio was charged with five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Morán allowed five in 1 1/3. The bullpen did not save a starter who had already been chased.

New York won for the 10th time in 14 games and moved four games ahead of Boston in the wild-card picture, per the Associated Press wrap. The clubs split the season series no longer. The Yankees took seven of 13.

Fantasy points measure what happened in the box. Share price is a separate number. They can move together. They are not the same thing.

Boston opens a series at Fenway against Seattle with Payton Tolle. New York heads to Anaheim. Warren's seven innings travel. The nine-run eighth will travel farther. The Red Sox have to explain a fifth-inning challenge that stood and an eighth inning they never escaped.
