Yankees 10, Rockies 3: Volpe's Slam in a Bronx Return

Recalled in the morning, a slam by the seventh

September 10, 2026 - Bronx - Anthony Volpe was back in the majors for a few hours when he lined a grand slam over the short porch in right. The Associated Press recap called it a rousing return. The box score called it five RBI, a career high. The New York Yankees beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3 and swept the series.

Yankee Stadium was cloudy and 82 degrees, wind in from right at 5 mph. Attendance was 40,706. The game lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes. Aaron Judge sat as planned after starting two games in a row off the 60-day injured list. New York did not need him.

The Yankees moved within three games of Tampa Bay in the AL East and 4 1/2 ahead of Boston for the first wild card with 16 to play, per the AP recap. It is the closest they have been to first since Aug. 23. They are 84-62, a season-best 22 games over .500, and they host the Mets this weekend.

García's 30th, then Karros answered

Ben Rice singled to right in the first. Cody Bellinger struck out. Jasson Domínguez grounded Rice to third. Luis García Jr. hit a fly ball to center for his 30th homer. 2-0. Spencer Jones singled. George Lombard Jr. bounced into a force. The night already had a two-run cushion and a first-inning homer from a first baseman New York added to keep nights like this from stalling.

Kyle Karros answered in the second. Two strikeouts from Max Fried, then a fly ball to left that the AP recap measured at 431 feet. His 11th. 2-1. Fried struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings, 80 pitches, his third start since coming off the injured list. He did not last long enough to own the game. He also did not give Colorado another clean look.

New York put the inning back on Colorado. Ryan McMahon singled. Austin Wells walked. Volpe singled through the left side, McMahon scoring. 3-1. Rice grounded the runners up. Bellinger lifted a sacrifice fly to center. 4-1. That was the shape of the first two innings: García's homer, Karros's answer, then Volpe and Bellinger taking the extra run.

Ryan Feltner (5-10) lasted five: six hits, four runs, one walk, two strikeouts, 83 pitches. He left a 4-1 game that still looked like a night Colorado could climb. It was not.

Six in the seventh, and the porch did the rest

Colorado got one back in the seventh. Ezequiel Tovar walked. Jake McCarthy tripled to right, his ninth, Tovar scoring. 4-2. Connor Norby walked. Hunter Goodman flew out. The Rockies had the tying run on deck and did not get him home.

The bottom half ended the argument. Bellinger doubled to center, his 25th. Domínguez walked. García grounded out. Jones singled to center, both runners scoring, Jones taking second. 6-2. Lombard popped out. McMahon walked. Wells walked, bases loaded. Volpe, recalled earlier in the day, lined his second homer of the season to right. Grand slam. 10-2. The AP recap said he had already singled in a run in the second. Five RBI. Two extra-base nights in one box score, if you count the way the seventh felt.

John Schreiber (2-3) worked 1 1/3 scoreless for his first win as a Yankee. Ryan Yarbrough, Brent Headrick, Luis Gil, and Michael Fulmer split the rest after Fried. Gil allowed an unearned run in the eighth when Zac Veen walked and Adael Amador singled, the ball deflected by Domínguez. 10-3. Colorado loaded the bases in the ninth and did not score. Eight hits, 11 left on base, a season-worst seven-game road losing streak.

Jones finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Bellinger went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a sacrifice fly, and a stolen base. García's 30th was the first punch. Volpe's slam was the last one that mattered. McMahon scored twice. Wells walked three times and scored twice. Heliot Ramos grounded out as a late sub. The 11 hits were enough because the seventh inning did not ask for more.

A sweep, then the Mets

Colorado is 55-91, last in the majors, four straight losses and 10 of 13. McCarthy had two hits and the triple. Tovar reached twice. Karros's homer was the extra-base hit that made the second inning look competitive. The rest of the order left 11 men on. That is a road trip that has already told on itself.

New York has won 16 of 23. The magic of a Thursday in September is not poetry. It is a recalled shortstop playing second, a 30-homer first baseman, and a six-run inning against a club that cannot finish a rally. The Subway Series opens in the Bronx. The AL East is three games. Volpe's night is the one that will get clipped first.
