White Sox Acquire Luis Castillo From Mariners in Four-Player Trade

Late Saturday into early Sunday, the Chicago White Sox acquired right-hander Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in a four-player swap that reshapes both clubs before Monday’s deadline.

Quick answer: Chicago gets Castillo, a three-time All-Star starter. Seattle gets right-hander Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, catching prospect Boston Smith (recently Chicago’s No. 15 prospect, now in Seattle’s system), and the salary space that comes with dealing a veteran starter.

The trade details

MLB.com and club announcements confirmed the structure first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan:

ESPN’s Alden González reported that Chicago is taking on the remaining money on Castillo’s contract: roughly $7.4 million left on 2026, plus $22.75 million for 2027, with a $25 million vesting option for 2028 tied to innings and health thresholds. That is not a pure rental flip. That is a multi-year commitment from a White Sox club sitting in the AL Central race.

Castillo is expected to join Chicago for a road set that continues the club’s push after a strong stretch of July baseball. Seattle turns the page on a rotation pillar and cashes innings for bullpen help, outfield depth, and a prospect bat/catching piece.

Why the White Sox wanted Castillo

Chicago did not buy the best pitcher on the market. Chicago bought a known quantity with a long track record of eating innings when healthy.

Seattle is not rebuilding from zero. Seattle is choosing not to keep paying for mid-rotation innings that have not returned mid-rotation results in 2026. That is a cold sentence. It is also how payroll flexibility gets made in August.

Downstream: the George Kirby question

Every Castillo trade rumor for weeks came with a shadow name: George Kirby.

Moving Castillo does not force Seattle to trade Kirby. It does change the math. One fewer veteran starter means fewer innings to cover if Seattle stays quiet. It also means fewer expensive arms on the books if the club decides the window needs a harder reset.

Treat Kirby talk as smoke until a second deal lands. The Castillo move is real. The Kirby sequel is optional. Contenders still calling Seattle will read this as an opening. Seattle can still answer with a hold.

AL West pitching value shifts either way. Castillo’s innings leave the division. Domínguez’s leverage innings enter Seattle’s bullpen conversation. That is a different kind of value, not a one-for-one replacement.

What this says about both clubs

Chicago is acting like a club that believes the AL Central is winnable now. Paying into 2027 for Castillo is not a two-month rental mindset. It is a “we need innings and reputation” mindset from a first-place roster that has already shown it can win ugly extras and beat good teams.

Seattle is acting like a club that wants optionality. Salary off the books. A reliever who can help immediately. A prospect who might stick. An outfielder who might hit. None of that replaces Castillo’s best seasons. All of it can still be a rational trade if the Mariners decide this winter’s market, not this August’s standings, is the real fight.
