White Sox 8, Padres 2: Munetaka Murakami's Big Fly Keys a Road Rout at Petco Park

The lead

May 1, 2026 - San Diego - The Chicago White Sox opened their weekend set at Petco Park with a rare wire-to-wire tone setter, beating the San Diego Padres 8-2 behind an early avalanche and a quiet finish from the pen.

Munetaka Murakami connected for a three-run homer, his 13th of the season, during a six-run second inning. Colson Montgomery added a solo homer later off German Marquez, Sam Antonacci drove in a run with a single, and Tristan Peters scratched an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single in MLB.com's highlight sequence. Jordan Hicks finished the ninth after San Diego's late rally trimmed the deficit to 8-2.

How the game turned

The second inning decided the night. The White Sox turned traffic into a crooked number with Andrew Benintendi's sacrifice fly, Antonacci's knock, a run scored on an error, and Murakami's long ball that made it 6-0.

That is not a small hill for a home club to climb, especially when Marquez could not stabilize. MLB.com also noted Murakami's 13 homers in his first 32 career games ranked third on a list behind 2017 Rhys Hoskins and Aristides Aquino's early surge, a trivia line that still doubles as a scouting report: hard contact is already following him in the big leagues.

San Diego scratched back in the eighth with RBI singles from Miguel Andujar and Manny Machado, but Hicks still wrapped the save situation without further damage.

Pitching and matchup notes

Noah Schultz earned his first strikeout on the board in MLB.com's sequence during the fifth and worked into the middle innings as Chicago tried to preserve a rested pen after building the lead. Osvaldo Bido surfaced in the eighth when the Padres threatened.

Marquez took the loss on a night his ERA line ballooned after multiple Barrels in one inning. The Padres' three-game losing streak, marked in MLB.com's story as their first such skid of 2026, matters because this club had been tough at home before Chicago's early ambush.

Bats that changed the board

Murakami's blast cleared the bases after Chicago manufactured contact. Montgomery's solo shot extended comfort. Benintendi and Austin Hays appeared in the scoring sequence around small-ball and aggressive baserunning.

For San Diego, Fernando Tatis Jr. tripled in the sixth as the Padres searched for a spark, but the heart of the order arrived late against a lead that had already aged.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

The White Sox ranked second on the May 1 AthX Engine team board with 17 team FP. Munetaka Murakami logged 9 AthX Engine hitting FP while Noah Schultz stacked meaningful pitching totals on the same card in daily scoring.

Road blowouts still register cleanly on team fantasy totals when the staff limits walks and the lineup clusters runs in one or two innings. AthX Engine daily scoring is separate from dynamic pricing.

What comes next

Chicago carried road swagger into the rest of the set while San Diego worked to regroup after its first three-game skid. AthX users should keep Murakami and Montgomery on the power watchlist after another loud box from the White Sox.
