Tigers 10, Blue Jays 1: Torkelson's Three-Run Shot Opens a Sixth Straight

Two outs, a hanging sweeper, and a 4-0 that never came back

September 15, 2026 - Toronto - Spencer Torkelson had been waiting for a pitch he could drive. Michael Lorenzen hung a sweeper with two outs in the fourth, and Torkelson hit it to left-center for his 24th homer. Eduardo Valencia scored. Max Clark scored. The Detroit Tigers had four in the inning, a 4-0 lead, and a night that stayed that way. They beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-1 for a sixth straight win.

Roof closed. 68 degrees. First pitch 7:07 p.m. Attendance 43,554. The game lasted 2 hours, 57 minutes. Detroit had 10 hits. Toronto had six. The Tigers are 72-79. The MLB recap said they remain 4 1/2 games back of the last American League Wild Card spot. A 10-1 on a Tuesday in September is how a club keeps playing anyway. Toronto is 75-77.

Hitless, then Clark's double, then the blast

Detroit did not have a hit against Toronto's bullpen day until Lorenzen entered in the fourth. The MLB recap said the Tigers had already been robbed twice: Ernie Clement dove to take a single from Valencia, and Brett Bateman leaped at the wall on a drive from Kevin McGonigle in the third. The lineup was not quiet. It was unlucky. Then Lorenzen lost the zone.

Riley Greene walked. Valencia walked. Clark slashed an RBI double down the left-field line. 1-0. Torkelson did the rest. Three-run homer. 4-0. Two outs, four runs, and the inning that was supposed to be the bulk of Toronto's night had already given the game away. Lorenzen lasted two innings: four hits, five runs, three walks, one strikeout, 53 pitches. He was the arm meant to eat innings. He ate two.

Greene added a two-out RBI single in the fifth, 101.5 mph to right, the MLB recap said. McGonigle scored. 5-0. John Peck singled Torkelson home in the sixth and was thrown out trying for second. 6-0. The Tigers were done waiting on contact. They were stacking it.

Five scoreless, a bases-loaded curveball, and 2 hits that did not hurt

Drew Anderson threw five shutout innings. Two hits. Four strikeouts. Three walks. 88 pitches. The MLB recap called it his best start since he joined Detroit's rotation. The third inning was the only stretch that looked like trouble. He walked George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. after a runner had already reached, and the bases were loaded. Alejandro Kirk rolled a curveball at the knees to short. Anderson got the ground ball he wanted. He got the out. The inning died.

The two hits he allowed, the MLB recap said, were a softly hit ball and a grounder. He struck out four and got seven whiffs, five of them on a fastball he kept on the edges. Velocity was down from his season average. Location was not. Brant Hurter threw 1 2/3 scoreless after him. Jacob Waguespack threw two more. Kyle Finnegan inherited a 8-0 game in the eighth and let Kirk single Bateman home. 8-1. It was Toronto's only run. It did not change the night.

Anderson spent most of 2026 in the bullpen, then moved into the rotation after Detroit traded Tarik Skubal to Los Angeles. The MLB recap said he has a 2.58 ERA in eight starts since that move. Tuesday was the cleanest of those eight. Five innings, zero earned, a win, and a lineup that finally gave him a lead he could keep.

Two in the eighth, two more in the ninth, and a 10-1 that looked like one

The linescore put two more Tigers runs in the eighth. The MLB recap attributed them to a throwing error by Kirk. 8-0 before Toronto's single. Then the ninth, which was just Detroit finishing the math. Hao-Yu Lee homered to left, his ninth. 9-1. Ben Malgeri singled. Valencia doubled. Clark singled Malgeri home. 10-1. Torkelson struck out. Zach McKinstry lined out. The inning did not need another homer.

Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, a walk, a stolen base, three runs, and three RBI. Clark went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Lee added the ninth-inning solo. Greene drove in one. Peck drove in one. McGonigle walked three times and scored. Detroit left enough traffic on the bases to make a 10-1 look messy in the box and simple on the scoreboard.

Toronto got two hits from Bateman, a single from Springer, and Kirk's RBI. Kazuma Okamoto went 1-for-4. Guerrero lined out with the tying run nowhere in sight. The Blue Jays left the eighth with one run and a double play behind it. That was the home half of a 10-1.

A sixth straight, and a Wild Card that is still 4 1/2 away

Detroit has now won six in a row. The MLB recap was honest about the rest: the playoff odds are still thin, and 4 1/2 games in mid-September is a real number. A 10-1 does not close that gap by itself. It does keep a club that traded its ace from looking finished. Anderson gave them five scoreless. Torkelson gave them the inning. The bullpen kept Toronto from turning one rally into a night.

Lorenzen took the loss. Joe Mantiply allowed Lee's homer in the ninth. Brendan Cellucci and Braydon Fisher threw scoreless innings in between and did not get a lead to hold. Toronto used six pitchers on a bullpen day and still needed the starter-who-wasn't to give them length. He did not.

The series stays in Toronto. The Tigers are still chasing. Tuesday did not catch the field. It did send a 10-1 onto a 15-game slate and a rotation piece who keeps looking like the reason Detroit can still show up in September.
