Red Sox 5, Orioles 0: Gray's 17th Win, Second Straight Shutout in Baltimore

Seven innings, three hits, the win lead in the majors

September 5, 2026 - Baltimore - Sonny Gray threw seven three-hit innings Saturday at Camden Yards, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-0. It was Boston's second straight shutout here and a 3-0 series lead.

Gray (17-4) struck out seven and walked three on 92 pitches. The 17 wins passed Cristopher Sánchez for the major league lead. He allowed baserunners in five innings and still never let Baltimore put a run on the board. That is the whole start: traffic, then nothing.

The first five innings stayed 0-0. Chris Bassitt was matching him. Camden Yards had a September game that looked like it might stay a one-mistake night. Boston did not hit a homer. It did not need one.

The third, when it could have broken

The only real trouble came in the third. Colton Cowser was on and tried to score on Blaze Alexander's fielder's choice. Connor Wong tagged him out at the plate. Gray exhaled and got the rest of the inning. If Cowser scores there, the night has a different shape and Gray is managing a 1-0 hole instead of a shutout.

Bassitt (6-5) lasted 5 2/3 innings: five hits, three earned, four walks, six strikeouts, 91 pitches. He kept Boston off the board through five. Then the sixth ended the duel. Eli White singled in two. Wong singled in one more. 3-0, and Bassitt was done. Rico Garcia recorded the last out of the inning.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa doubled in two in the seventh off Albert Suárez. 5-0. Trevor Story went 3-for-5 and scored twice, the table-setter the sixth and seventh needed. Nick Sogard had two hits, a walk, and a run. Mickey Gasper walked twice and scored. Jarren Duran walked and scored. Boston had nine hits. Five runs without a ball leaving the yard is how you beat a club that cannot finish an inning.

Baltimore's 0-for-7, and a bullpen escape

The Orioles went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Gunnar Henderson doubled and walked twice. Cowser doubled and walked. Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled. Heston Kjerstad and Dylan Beavers each singled. Five hits, eight left on, zero runs. That is a fifth straight loss after Baltimore had climbed back to .500 for the first time since April 30.

Greg Weissert inherited a mess in the eighth. Jovani Morán had put men on. Weissert struck out Pete Alonso with the bases loaded. Wyatt Olds finished the ninth. The shutout held.

Boston is 78-65, six games ahead of Cleveland, three behind the Yankees, still in the second wild-card spot. Baltimore is 69-74, three games behind Cleveland for the last wild-card place, with Texas and Toronto in between. A five-game losing streak in September is how a wild-card club becomes a spectator.

Payton Tolle (8-6, 3.23) was set to try for an 11th straight unbeaten start in Sunday's finale. Kyle Bradish (7-12, 4.01) had not won in his last seven for the Orioles.
