Rangers 6, Rays 0: Quantrill's Seven Quiet Innings, Seager's Two-Run Shot

September 3, 2026 - Arlington - Cal Quantrill gave the Rays two singles and two walks in seven innings. That was the whole Tampa Bay offense against him. The Texas Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-0 at Globe Life Field, and the AL's best record left town with three hits.

Corey Seager had already smoked two balls to the warning track. In the fifth he stopped missing. Two-run homer to right-center, his 14th, and a 1-0 game became 4-0 before the Rays' bats woke up. They never did.

Two singles, then nothing

Quantrill (7-5) has a 1.25 ERA in eight outings since July 28, the last time he faced this same Tampa Bay club. Thursday was the clean version of that stretch. Five strikeouts. Two walks. Two hits. No earned runs. The Rays put a runner in scoring position against him exactly as often as they scored: never.

Jakob Junis threw a scoreless eighth. Chase Silseth finished the ninth. Combined three-hitter. Texas shutout No. 13 this season. Yandy Díaz had two of Tampa Bay's three hits. Everybody else in that lineup went quiet, including Junior Caminero, Chandler Simpson, and Jonathan Aranda, who struck out three times.

Shane McClanahan (10-7) lasted five innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He has not finished a sixth inning since July 8. That is a long stretch for an ace on a first-place team, and Thursday did not break it. Quantrill's ERA in seven career starts against Tampa Bay is 1.77. The Rays keep seeing the same version of him in this building, and they keep leaving with the same problem: no traffic, no crooked number, no comeback.

Langford started it. Seager finished the middle.

Wyatt Langford doubled into the left-field corner in the fourth. Justin Foscue singled him home. 1-0. It was the kind of run you get when a lineup is patient and the other starter is leaking traffic.

The fifth was louder. Logan O'Hoppe reached. Ezequiel Duran flared a single to right that scored him. 2-0. Seager, after those two warning-track outs, drove McClanahan's pitch over the wall in right-center. Duran scored ahead of him. 4-0. That is the homer that ends the debate about whether a shutout is still in play.

Texas added two more in the eighth off Casey Legumina. Langford reached again. Evan Carter tripled him home, his third triple of the year, a ground ball that got past Jonny DeLuca in right. Jake Burger lifted a sacrifice fly to left. Carter scored. 6-0. The last two runs were insurance. The first four were the game.

Brandon Nimmo went 0-for-3 with a walk. Joc Pederson singled and did not score. The Rangers did not need the whole order. They needed Langford on base twice, Seager to stop hitting the track, and a starter who treated a first-place lineup like a July rehab start. They got all three.

What 6-0 means in early September

Texas is 70-71. A half-game behind Cleveland for the last AL wild-card spot, two games behind Houston in the West. You do not get to pick which version of a wild-card race you want in September. This is the one where a shutout of the East leaders is a necessary night, not a luxury.

Tampa Bay is still 83-57, three games up on the Yankees in the East, with the AL's best record. The Rays have lost 10 straight at Globe Life Field. Their last win in Arlington came on June 2, 2022. They have been shut out eight times this season and matched a season low in hits on Thursday. They are 9-11 since August 14 after an 18-4 stretch. First place does not make that road park any friendlier.

Friday is Nick Martinez (13-4, 2.99) for Tampa Bay against Kumar Rocker (5-10, 4.44) for Texas. Martinez spent his first four big-league seasons in this building. That is a better story than Thursday was for the visitors.

After the shutout
