One hit, and it came with two outs in the seventh
September 10, 2026 - Chicago - Jared Jones had a no-hitter into the seventh at Rate Field. He had walked the leadoff man in the third and the fourth and stranded both. Then Colson Montgomery doubled to right with two outs in the seventh, and the bid was over. Jones finished the inning. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 anyway.
The Associated Press recap said it was Jones's 40th career start and that he matched his longest outing. Seven innings, one hit, no runs, two walks, eight strikeouts, 90 pitches. Luke Weaver threw a clean eighth. Mason Montgomery got the last three outs for his 12th save. Chicago finished with two hits.
Clear, 74 degrees, wind left to right at 8 mph. Attendance 17,741. Game time 2 hours, 29 minutes. The White Sox have lost eight of 11. Their AL Central lead over idle Cleveland slipped to 1 1/2 games. Pittsburgh has won four straight and nine of 11.
Cruz's 18th, then a runner who died at third
Hagen Smith opened and lasted into the third: two hits, three strikeouts, 33 pitches, two innings plus one batter. Erick Fedde took over after that, per the Associated Press recap and the box. He was the one who paid for the fourth.
Oneil Cruz hit a fly ball to center for his 18th homer. 1-0. Bryan Reynolds, Nick Gonzales, and Brandon Lowe all flew out. One swing. One run. Jones had the lead he needed.
Chicago's best look was the bottom of the fourth. Miguel Vargas walked, stole second, and took third on a throwing error. Jones then got three fly balls: Munetaka Murakami to center, Andrew Benintendi to center, Colson Montgomery to second. Vargas stayed at third. The AP recap put it plainly. He got there. He stayed there.
Jones walked two and never let a runner score. The no-hit bid made the seventh louder than the rest of the night. Colson's double was sharp to right. Braden Montgomery lined out to left. Jones walked off the mound with a 1-0 game and a one-hitter through seven. Weaver struck out two in a 1-2-3 eighth.
Triolo runs, Cruz singles, 2-0
Jared Triolo singled off Fedde in the eighth. Konnor Griffin struck out while Triolo stole second, his 13th steal. Bryan Hudson took over. Cruz grounded a single to right, Triolo scoring. 2-0. The run was charged to Fedde. Reynolds bounced into a double play. Cruz finished 3-for-4 with a homer, a single, two RBI, and a run. That is the whole Pittsburgh offense that counted. Seven hits as a club. Two runs. Enough.
Fedde (8-9) went 5 1/3: four hits, two runs, one walk, one strikeout, 81 pitches. Jordan Hicks struck out two in a scoreless ninth for Chicago that did not matter. The White Sox used an opener and a long man and still got two runs of Cruz.
Mason Montgomery opened the ninth by allowing a Randal Grichuk single. Vargas grounded Grichuk to second. Murakami grounded him to third. Edgar Quero struck out. Save 12. The tying run never left the on-deck circle in any way that threatened the board. Chicago's second hit was that ninth-inning single. Two hits. Zero runs. A division lead that shrank on a night Cleveland did not play.
A no-hitter the club has been chasing
The AP recap noted Pittsburgh was seeking the franchise's seventh no-hitter. Francisco Córdova and Ricardo Rincón last did it as a combined job on July 12, 1997, against Houston. John Candelaria had the last solo no-hitter on Aug. 9, 1976, against the Dodgers. Colson Montgomery's double put that sentence back on the shelf. Jones still left with a shutout win and eight strikeouts.
Pittsburgh is 74-73. Chicago is 75-71. A 2-0 on the South Side in September is a race game for the club with the lead and a statement for the club that has won nine of 11. Cruz supplied the runs. Jones supplied the rest. Jake Mangum stole a base and did not score. Spencer Horwitz singled. Chase Meidroth walked and popped out. The White Sox lineup that is supposed to hold a division did not put a run on Jones, Weaver, or Montgomery.
AthX Engine after the baseball
AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) put Jones at 30 pitching fantasy points, second on the slate behind only Jacob deGrom's 31 in a loss. Cruz had 9 hitting FP. Triolo had 7. Weaver had 10 pitching FP in one inning. Pittsburgh finished with 7 team FP, fourth on the day. Chicago finished at minus-3. A seven-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts will do that even when the offense scores twice.
Fantasy points measure the night under platform scoring rules. Share prices also move with traders through dynamic pricing. They are related. They are not the same number.
