Phillies 3, Nationals 0: Wheeler's Seven Scoreless Steady a Shaky Rotation

Seven zeros after the rotation spent a day on the injured list

September 16, 2026 - Washington - Zack Wheeler needed this one. The Philadelphia Phillies had just put Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list. Cristopher Sánchez had struggled in Tuesday's loss. Wednesday, Wheeler threw seven scoreless innings, four hits, one walk, five strikeouts, 91 pitches, and the Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 3-0.

He faced the minimum over his last three innings and finished the seventh by striking out Dylan Crews with a 96.6 mph fastball at the knees, the MLB recap said. He is 13-5 with a 2.99 ERA. He is three strikeouts from 2,000 for his career. He has now completed seven innings in back-to-back starts.

Clear. 84 degrees. Wind 6 mph right to left. First pitch 6:45 p.m. Attendance 23,007. The game lasted 2 hours, 54 minutes. Philadelphia had five hits and 13 walks. Washington had four hits. The Phillies are 84-68. The Nationals are 71-82.

"Obviously, I know it's probably my last inning, so I just tried to really execute that pitch and just kind of put everything behind it that I could," Wheeler said of the Crews at-bat, per the MLB recap.

Four walks, a Bohm single, and a 2-0 that Wheeler never gave back

Jared Simpson opened for Washington. He lasted a third of an inning: one hit, two runs, four walks, 26 pitches. He is 1-1. Trea Turner scored on Alec Bohm's single to center, Bryce Harper to third, Luis Arraez to second. 1-0. Bryson Stott walked. Harper scored. 2-0. That was the inning. Simpson did not record a second out.

The Phillies walked 13 times. The MLB recap said that tied the Nationals' opponent record. They went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base. Bohm finished 2-for-2 with three walks and an RBI. Arraez went 1-for-2 with a double, three walks, and an RBI. His three walks tied a career high, which he also did on April 1, 2024, with Miami and September 21, 2021, with Minnesota, the MLB recap said. Turner walked, stole a base, and scored. Stott walked twice and stole a base. Justin Crawford doubled and walked.

Arraez doubled Harper home in the seventh. 3-0. That was the third run. It was also the only extra-base knock that scored. Interim manager Don Mattingly, per the MLB recap, looked at 13 walks and a 3-0 and took the win. "Got them in the strike zone. Yeah, pretty amazing, 13 walks is a lot of walks. I look at it as we won tonight... Obviously, you have chances to do more. We weren't able to do that, but take the W."

Riley Cornelio threw 2 2/3 scoreless after Simpson. Will Dion, Richard Lovelady, Luis Perales, and Yovanny Cruz followed. Perales walked five in two innings. Washington's staff could not throw strikes. Philadelphia's lineup could not cash most of them. Wheeler did not need a fourth run.

Alvarado, Duran, and a shutout built on first-pitch balls

Wheeler's plan was the Nationals' aggressiveness. "They're swinging first pitch a lot, so I threw a lot of first-pitch balls," he said, per the MLB recap. "But that was kind of on purpose just to see if I could get weak contact... For the most part, I was trying to throw outside the zone, as weird as that sounds, just to try to use their aggressiveness against them."

José Alvarado threw a scoreless eighth, one walk, one strikeout, his 16th hold. Jhoan Duran struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 31st save. Four Nationals hits. Daylen Lile had two of them. CJ Abrams doubled. Nobody else did damage. Washington left five on base and never put a runner in scoring position against Wheeler after the early contact died.

Wheeler missed the 2025 postseason after thoracic outlet decompression surgery in August, the MLB recap said. He is here for this one. "This time of the season is cool. It's special," he said. "This is where you want to be, and these games really, really matter... Getting that close to the finish line, you gotta really bear down, and I think everybody knows that."

A half-game behind Chicago, 4 1/2 behind Atlanta

The Cubs beat the Braves 8-4 on Wednesday. Philadelphia remains a half-game behind Chicago for the top National League Wild Card and 4 1/2 behind Atlanta in the East, the MLB recap said. Bohm called them must-wins. "We just want it in our control. If we win..." The rest is September math. A 3-0 with Wheeler on the mound is how a club keeps that math from getting worse after an IL day and a Sánchez loss.

The Nationals are 71-82. They walked 13 Phillies, got four hits, and watched Simpson fail to finish the first. Lile's two singles were the loudest contact they made. Abrams's double did not score. That is a shutout in your own park when the other starter is hunting 2,000 strikeouts and throwing first-pitch balls on purpose.

Philadelphia left 13 on. It still won 3-0. Wheeler is the reason that sentence works. The walks were the rest of the night, loud and unfinished. The shutout is what goes in the standings.
