Phillies 1, Braves 0: Luzardo Throws First Career Shutout, 12 Ks

Nine innings. Two hits. One swing.

September 7, 2026 - Philadelphia - Jesús Luzardo did not need a bullpen. He did not need a second run. He needed Kyle Schwarber to hit one into the second deck in the eighth, and then he needed two more outs in the ninth.

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0 at Citizens Bank Park. Luzardo threw a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts, one walk, and 109 pitches. It was the first complete-game shutout of his career, in start No. 150. The game lasted 1 hour, 51 minutes.

That is the whole card. Atlanta put two balls in play for hits. Philadelphia scored once. Everybody else was noise Luzardo refused to hear.

Holmes kept it a zero for six

Grant Holmes matched the mood if not the volume. Six innings, three hits, no runs, two walks, six strikeouts, 89 pitches. He struck out the side in the third. It was the sixth time this season he has thrown six shutout innings.

Philadelphia had a chance to wreck that in the first. Bases loaded, two outs, and Bryson Stott lined out to center. Holmes walked off the mound with a zero that lasted until the Phillies handed the eighth to the bullpen.

Didier Fuentes got the eighth. Schwarber did not. The DH went 2-for-4 and parked his MLB-leading 43rd homer to right-center, a solo shot that turned a pitching duel into a 1-0 lead. Fuentes finished two innings, one hit, one run, four strikeouts. The hit was the game.

Holmes left a runner at third in the seventh when Luis Arraez made an out to end the inning. The Braves' starter did his job. The Phillies' starter did not leave.

Trea Turner doubled and did not score. Bryce Harper walked once. Alec Bohm walked once. Brandon Marsh singled. The first-inning bases-loaded chance ended when Stott lined to center, and nothing after that scored until Schwarber.

Citizens Bank Park was 77 degrees and partly cloudy, wind in from left at 8 mph. That is not a cheap-homer night. Schwarber hit it into the second deck anyway. Right-center. MLB lead. Number 43. The Phillies have been waiting on that swing in games like this all summer. Monday they only needed it once.

Acuña heard it. Luzardo did not care.

Philadelphia's crowd spent the night booing Ronald Acuña Jr., who had hit a tying three-run homer in Sunday's 5-4 Braves win and taken a curtain call. He went 0-for-3 with a walk on Monday. The walk came in the ninth. It was Luzardo's only free pass of the night.

Ozzie Albies flew out to end it. Matt Olson had one of Atlanta's two hits. Michael Harris II had the other. The lineup's night was one swing from Schwarber and a lot of watching Luzardo work.

Seventy-eight of 109 pitches were strikes. He retired the last two batters after the Acuña walk. He improved to 14-5. The Associated Press recap noted the $135 million, five-year deal he signed in March, and Monday was the version of that contract the Phillies bought: a left-hander who can finish a September game against the club sitting in first.

The series split 2-2. Atlanta still leads the NL East. Philadelphia cut the gap to four games, 81-63 against 85-59.

What a 1-0 does in September

A shutout this clean is rare even when the starter is rolling. Luzardo did not walk anyone until the ninth. He did not allow a homer. He did not hand a runner to a reliever. The Braves' best looks were two singles and a late walk, and none of them scored.

Holmes deserved better than a no-decision. Six shutout innings against this Phillies group is a quality start in any month. Fuentes inherited a 0-0 game and left with the loss (5-2) because Schwarber hunts mistakes in the eighth the way he has all year.

Atlanta opens a six-game homestand Tuesday with RHP AJ Smith-Shawver against Tampa Bay. Philadelphia starts RHP Andrew Painter in the first of three against Houston.

AthX Engine after the baseball

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) put Luzardo at 44 pitching fantasy points, the highest pitcher total on the 11-game Monday slate by a wide margin. Holmes checked in at 21 pitching FP. Philadelphia finished with 5 team FP. That is what a 1-0 looks like when one swing is the entire offense: the starter owns the board, the team score stays modest.

Fantasy points measure the night under platform scoring rules. Share prices also move with traders through dynamic pricing. They are related. They are not the same number.
