Orioles 8, Royals 2: Baltimore Closes the Series Sweep

A balk, a lost fly ball, and a five-run sixth

July 12, 2026 - Baltimore - Leody Taveras homered in the second—a 448-foot, two-run shot—and the Baltimore Orioles led 2-0 early against the Kansas City Royals.

Fine start. The game really broke open in the sixth.

Royals right fielder Jac Caglianone lost a fly ball in the sun. Matt Strahm (3-3) balked in a run. Taveras singled in the tiebreaking run during a five-run rally. Jeremiah Jackson added a pinch-hit RBI double. Taveras scored on another Strahm balk. 7-2, and Baltimore was on its way to an 8-2 win and a three-game sweep at Camden Yards, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.

Taveras finished 3 RBIs on the day—9 hitting FP on the AthX Engine board. The Orioles entered the break on their first four-game winning streak of the season.

Baz's nine Ks, then the bullpen bridge

Shane Baz worked 4 2/3 innings, struck out nine, allowed one earned run, and left at 104 pitches. Grant Wolfram (2-2) got the win as the second of five Baltimore relievers.

Baz's 9.7 pitching FP set the tone on a day Baltimore graded at 17 team FP—tied for third on the July 12 slate.

Kansas City (38-59) was swept for the eighth time this season, most in the majors. The Royals' fifth straight loss left them a season-high 21 games under .500. Lane Thomas went 3-for-4 with an RBI for KC, but the sixth inning buried them.

Basallo's homer, then the benches cleared

Samuel Basallo added a solo homer in the seventh to make it 8-2. Immediately after, Lucas Erceg hit Blaze Alexander on the left hand with a pitch.

Alexander shouted at Erceg. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz stepped in to restrain him. Both dugouts and bullpens moved toward the plate—no punches, no ejections—but Albernaz said afterward Alexander has a nondisplaced fracture of his left hand.

Alexander had two hits and scored twice before the injury. The sweep felt complete; the seventh-inning tension was the sour note Baltimore carries into the break.

Into the off days

After All-Star Week, Kansas City opens Friday at home against San Diego. Baltimore starts Friday in Houston.
