Mariners 7, Angels 3: Gilbert's Eight Ks, Wilson's Last Day

Four scoreless from Gilbert, then a last lineup card

September 27, 2026 - Seattle - Logan Gilbert faced the Los Angeles Angels for four innings on the last day of the season and did not give them a hit. Eight strikeouts. One walk. Sixty-one pitches. The Seattle Mariners won 7-3 at T-Mobile Park, finished 76-86, and sent Dan Wilson out with a win on the afternoon he told the club he would not manage here in 2027.

Sunny. 59 degrees. Wind 11 mph in from left. First pitch 12:10 p.m. Attendance 44,761. The game lasted 2 hours, 56 minutes. Wilson delivered the news in a pregame meeting after the clubhouse closed to reporters, per MLB.com. The baseball still had to be played.

"This season has been very difficult, and of course, the results have not been what any of us have expected," Wilson said afterward, per MLB.com. "As a result, it's concluded that today is my last day as manager of the Seattle Mariners."

Young scored. Arozarena doubled. Kikuchi never caught up.

Cole Young scored in the second on Weston Wilson's groundout. 1-0. Randy Arozarena scored in the third on Cal Raleigh's single. Dominic Canzone scored on Josh Naylor's groundout. 3-0. Yusei Kikuchi (the loss, 1-7) lasted five innings: six hits, three earned, one walk, seven strikeouts.

Gilbert was already gone by then. Four innings is a short Game 162 start on purpose. Eduard Bazardo (the win, 4-4) threw the sixth: two hits, one run, one walk, three strikeouts. Hoby Milner threw two scoreless later, one strikeout, no walks.

The sixth inning turned a 3-1 game into a 6-1 game. Vaughn Grissom's sacrifice fly had scored Bryce Teodosio. Then Denzer Guzman threw one away, Young scored, and Arozarena doubled to left. Jhonny Pereda and Weston Wilson came in. 6-1.

Jose Siri homered to left in the eighth, his 10th, Zach Neto scoring. 6-3. Leo Rivas reached third on a double play in the bottom of the eighth. Raleigh singled. Seattle finished at 7. Siri went 1-for-1 with the homer and two RBI. Raleigh went 3-for-5. Arozarena went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Pereda went 2-for-3 with a double. Teodosio had two hits for the Angels.

Sammy Peralta and Trevor Martin covered the rest of Los Angeles' staff. The Angels finished 62-100. They scored three and never led.

A last day that was about more than the box score

Wilson read a prepared statement, then took questions. "Collectively we failed to meet our own expectations this season," president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said, per MLB.com. "Dan and I both care deeply about this organization, these players, and the future of the Mariners. After much discussion, it was concluded that a new direction is best for 2027 and beyond."

Chairman John Stanton thanked Wilson and said the club wants to keep him in the organization. Pitching coach Pete Woodworth and director of pitching strategy Trent Blank are expected back, per MLB.com. Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander are expected back too.

Gilbert's four innings were the cleanest thing on a messy year. Eight swing-and-misses against a last-place lineup is not a season rewrite. It is a reminder that the rotation still has a front. Raleigh's three hits were the same kind of reminder. The Mariners just spent 162 games proving that reminders are not a plan.

Julio Rodríguez flew out to end the eighth. The crowd that showed up for Game 162 watched a 7-3 and a manager walk away. Wilson said the organization has expressed interest in a role going forward. He also said he needs time. That is the honest version of a 76-86 finish.
