Sixteen hits on a makeup night that refused to stay quiet

July 23, 2026 – St. Louis – A day after Arizona put up a season-high 17 hits at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks showed up at Busch for a June 25 rainout and refused to cool off.

Tyler Locklear went 3-for-4 with his first homer of the season and three RBIs. Brandon Pfaadt survived four straight hits to open the game, then settled. And the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-6, per the Associated Press on CBS Sports.

Sixteen hits. Three straight wins. Nine of 11. Buyer-season baseball with the deadline still ahead.

Jordan Walker's first-pitch roar, then Pfaadt finds the brakes

The night started like a Cardinals story.

Jordan Walker—back in the order after winning the 2026 Home Run Derby—got a standing ovation, then lined an RBI double on the first pitch he saw. St. Louis stacked four straight hits to open, and Busch had a 2-0 lead before Arizona even settled into the box.

Pfaadt (5-1) looked like he might be in for a long one. Instead he flipped the script: just three more hits the rest of the way through six innings. That is the whole Arizona thesis in miniature—absorb the early noise, then own the middle.

Ketel Marte never made it into the lineup. Back stiffness scratched him less than an hour before first pitch after he was originally booked to lead off and play second. The Diamondbacks still put 16 hits on the board without their usual table-setter.

Locklear's first, then an 11-batter eighth

Michael McGreevy (4-8) kept St. Louis close enough through six-plus—four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3—until Locklear made the night his.

The two-run shot in the fourth, Locklear's first of the year, flipped the game. An RBI single up the middle off Matt Svanson in the eighth stretched it. Then Arizona sent 11 batters to the plate in that eighth and scored five off Svanson and Justin Bruihl. That is not a tidy half-inning. That is a makeup game turning into a track meet on the road.

St. Louis scratched four two-out runs off Ryan Thompson in the ninth—enough to make the final look closer than the middle felt, not enough to steal the result. The Cardinals have now lost 11 of 16.
