Cubs 2, Brewers 1: Crow-Armstrong's 39th, Gausman's Seven Innings

September 3, 2026 - Chicago - Pete Crow-Armstrong golfed a low changeup 413 feet to the basket in center. That was the third inning, and that was the game. The Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 at Wrigley Field because Kevin Gausman threw seven innings that looked like the reason Chicago traded for him.

Logan Henderson was just as good after the homer. He retired 14 straight. He still took the loss. A 2-1 game between the NL Central leader and the club eight games back does not need a third homer. It needed one, and Crow-Armstrong hit it.

Two runs, then a long quiet

Carson Kelly singled to start the third. Crow-Armstrong, named NL Player of the Month for August before the game after 14 homers in the month, turned Henderson's changeup into his 39th. One behind Kyle Schwarber for the major league lead. 2-0 Cubs. Wrigley sounded like a club that had just split a series it was supposed to lose.

Henderson (9-3) did not flinch. Seven innings, three hits, two runs, zero walks, seven strikeouts. The three-game winning streak ended. His last four starts: five runs allowed, 1.67 ERA. Thursday was the version of that stretch where one pitch is the whole box score.

Andrew Vaughn answered in the fourth. Low splitter, 420 feet, over the left-field bleachers and onto Waveland Avenue, his sixth homer and the first in 24 games. 2-1. That was Milwaukee's only run. Jackson Chourio, Christian Yelich, William Contreras, and Brice Turang combined for one hit. Turang struck out three times.

Gausman's sixth start in Chicago

Gausman (9-11) went seven, five hits, one run, one walk, nine strikeouts. Sixth start since the deadline deal from Toronto. The Vaughn homer was the mistake. Everything after it was a veteran right-hander throwing strikes in a one-run game. Alex Bregman doubled and did not score. The Cubs did not need another run once Gausman decided two was enough.

Ryan Zeferjahn threw a scoreless eighth. Ryan Rolison retired the side in the ninth for his second save. DL Hall had already given Chicago a clean eighth on the Milwaukee side, too late to change what Henderson left behind.

Chicago 2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors. Milwaukee 1 run, 5 hits, 0 errors. That is a pitching-duel box score. The difference was one changeup and one splitter, and only one of those put two runs on the board.

Ian Happ, Michael Busch, Seiya Suzuki, and Nico Hoerner went a combined 0-for-12. The Cubs did not manufacture a third run because they did not need one. Milwaukee put David Hamilton on with a single and a steal and still could not get him home. Joey Ortiz and Garrett Mitchell singled and died on the bases. A 2-1 game at Wrigley in September is supposed to feel tense. Gausman and Rolison made it feel decided.

A split, then Cincinnati and Miami

The Cubs salvaged a split of the four-game set. They are 79-62, eight back in the division, five games up in wild-card position. Milwaukee is 87-54 and still the best record in the league. The season series sits 4-6 Brewers, with three more in Milwaukee next week. Thursday does not flip a division. It keeps Chicago from getting buried before that rematch.

Friday the Brewers go to Cincinnati, Shane Drohan (7-5, 3.75) against Rhett Lowder (6-8, 5.14). The Cubs open in Miami, Shota Imanaga (8-10, 4.01) against Janson Junk (6-8, 4.11). Crow-Armstrong will keep chasing 40. Gausman will keep taking the ball like a pitcher who changed leagues and did not change his job description.

Henderson deserved better. That is not a feeling. That is seven innings, three hits, and a 2-1 line. September does not grade on deserved.

After the baseball
