Brewers 3, Padres 2: Contreras, Chourio, and a Roof in the Ninth

A fly that hit the roof. A homer that did not have to hustle.

October 3, 2026 - Milwaukee - Ty France hit a towering fly in the ninth. It struck a roof truss at American Family Field and dropped into Jackson Chourio's glove. Trevor Megill had the last out. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 in National League Division Series Game 1 and lead the series 1-0.

Roof closed. 69 degrees. First pitch 7:38 p.m. CT. Attendance 42,843. The game lasted 3 hours, 28 minutes. Pat Murphy told MLB.com he wondered if Bob Uecker had reached up and knocked the ball down. It was the truss. ESPN's scoreboard called it a potential go-ahead homer thwarted by the roof.

Two in the second. Chourio tied it. Contreras took it.

Robbie Ray lasted 2 2/3: four hits, two earned, two walks, one strikeout, 45 pitches, Chourio's homer. San Diego scored first. Xander Bogaerts scored on Luis Campusano's single to right in the second. Ethan Salas scored on Jake Cronenworth's fielder's choice. 2-0 Padres. Milwaukee had 103 regular-season wins and a bye week. It still had to climb.

Jacob Misiorowski threw four innings: four hits, two earned, one walk, six strikeouts, 88 pitches. He did not get a decision. Garrett Mitchell was on when Chourio homered to left-center in the third. 2-2. Chourio is 22. The MLB recap said the swing made him Milwaukee's franchise leader with five postseason homers.

William Contreras homered to center in the seventh off Adrian Morejon. 3-2. He did not have to sprint. The MLB recap noted he had been benched in the final week of the regular season for failing to hustle on a grounder in Philadelphia, then dove into first the next night. Saturday he trotted. Morejon is 0-1. Two innings, three hits, one earned, one homer.

"These are the types of games that I like," Contreras said through interpreter Daniel de Mondesert, per MLB.com. "The games that are close."

Hall escaped. Megill finished. The roof did the rest.

Antonio Senzatela and Aaron Ashby covered the first inning after Misiorowski. Three Padres reached against Senzatela. Contreras threw out Dustin Harris stealing. Murphy called Contreras magnificent. Chourio called him someone to follow.

Abner Uribe put two on in a third of an inning. DL Hall inherited a mess, escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, and recorded the first two outs of the eighth with the tying run at third. He is 1-0 for one inning, no hits, two walks, 20 pitches. Megill struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. to keep the lead, then lived through France's fly in the ninth. 1.1 innings, one hit, two strikeouts, the save.

San Diego had nine hits and 12 men left on. Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Harris went 2-for-4 with a walk. Tatis went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts. Jackson Merrill went 0-for-5. Cronenworth drove in a run without a hit. France went 1-for-4 with a hit by pitch and the fly that became the clip of the night.

Milwaukee had seven hits. Chourio and Contreras accounted for all three runs. Jake Bauers went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. Mitchell went 1-for-3 with a walk, a steal, and the run Chourio drove in. Brice Turang walked and stole. Christian Yelich singled. The 103-win club that hit the fewest home runs in the National League during the regular season, the MLB recap said, won Game 1 with two of them.

Milwaukee has the 1-0. San Diego has the traffic it did not cash.

Murphy said they earned it and were not perfect. Contreras liked winning with homers because people think this club cannot. Hall and Megill liked leaving with a lead. Ray lasted less than three. Morejon took the loss on the swing that put Milwaukee in front.

The series continues in Milwaukee. One roof truss does not decide a best-of-five. It did decide the ninth inning of Game 1, and that is the version of Saturday the Padres have to live with until they put a ball in a place Chourio cannot catch.

AthX Engine after the baseball

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) put Milwaukee at 7 team fantasy points on a 3-2. Megill had 9.33 pitching FP. Chourio and Contreras had 7 hitting FP each. San Diego sat at 0. Those numbers are the one-run win: three runs, two against, two homers, and a save that needed the roof.

Fantasy points measure the night under platform scoring rules. Share prices also move with traders through dynamic pricing. They are related. They are not the same number.
