Astros 10, Mariners 7: Walker's Three-Run Shot in the 10th

August 14, 2026 - Houston - Christian Walker hit the ball to the train tracks in left with two outs in the 10th. Three runs. Ballgame. The Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 10-7 after Seattle had already taken a 7-5 lead in extra innings and after Yordan Alvarez had already hit his American League-leading 36th homer in the first.

Daikin Park stayed loud because the game never sat still. Twelve hits each. Five runs in the Houston 10th. Two in the Seattle 10th before that. Andrés Muñoz threw the pitch Walker sent to the tracks.

Alvarez, then a second-inning pile

Alvarez went deep in the first. Seattle had already scored twice. The lead changed before the bullpens even thought about it.

Walker singled with two outs in the second. Cam Smith tripled him in to make it 2-2. Christian Vázquez walked. Jeremy Peña singled Smith home. 3-2. George Kirby intentionally walked Alvarez to load the bases. Isaac Paredes beat out an infield single that scored two. 5-2, and the Astros had the inning they needed to survive everything that came later.

Paredes finished with two hits and three RBI. Jose Altuve had two hits and two steals. Alvarez added a walk to the homer. Houston's 5-2 lead after two did not hold as a final. It held as a cushion.

Rodden's first hit, then the 10th

Brock Rodden made his MLB debut and got his first career hit in the eighth, a ground-rule double that drove in a run during Seattle's two-run inning. Victor Robles had three hits and two RBI. The Mariners kept answering.

The 10th started with Robles tripling off Enyel De Los Santos (2-3). Rodden's sacrifice fly made it 7-5, Seattle. Houston's half: Paredes singled in a run. Altuve singled with two outs. Daulton Varsho singled in another. Then Walker found Muñoz (5-5). 10-7.

Peter Lambert had given Houston five innings, four hits, two earned, six strikeouts, two walks. He did not factor in the decision. De Los Santos got the win. Muñoz took the loss. That is extra innings: the starter's line sits in the box, and the night belongs to whoever is still in the game when the tracks get involved.

Line: Astros 10 runs, 12 hits; Mariners 7 runs, 12 hits; no errors. Ten innings.

A series that still has Saturday

Houston is 63-60. Seattle is 57-66. The Astros needed a walk-off more than a statement. They got both, because a three-run homer in the 10th is a statement whether you scheduled it or not.

Saturday: Emerson Hancock (6-7, 3.35) for Seattle, Hayden Wesneski (2-0, 3.86) for Houston.

I would not build a week around one extra-inning win. I would remember that Seattle took the lead in the 10th and still lost, which is the kind of night that follows a club around if August stays this tight in the wild-card picture.
