WBC 2026: Japan Edges Australia 4-3 in Pool C at Tokyo Dome

WBC 2026: Japan Powers Past Australia Late, Takes Top Seed in Pool C

Japan (Samurai Japan) stayed perfect in the 2026 World Baseball Classic by beating Australia 4-3 in Pool C on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo—but for nearly seven innings one of the greatest upsets in international baseball history was in the making. Connor MacDonald—a former Astros position-player prospect who turned to the mound only three years ago and had never pitched above the Australian Baseball League—shut down Japan for three scoreless innings with his family in the stands. Tomoyuki Sugano matched him with four shutout frames in his first start back at Tokyo Dome (his home from 2013–24). Australia took a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Aaron Whitefield (eight MLB games with Twins/Angels) stole third and raced home when catcher Kenya Wakatsuki's throw went wild.

The dream of an upset faded in the seventh. Jon Kennedy missed the return toss on a potential inning-ending double play—similar to the bad luck that had befallen the Czechs against Australia two days earlier—and Masataka Yoshida (Red Sox) took advantage, smashing his second homer of the tournament, a two-run shot to right for a 2-1 Japan lead. Japan added two in the eighth on a Teruaki Sato double and Seiya Suzuki bases-loaded walk. Alex Hall and Rixon Wingrove hit solo homers in the ninth off closer Taisei Ota to make it 4-3, but that was it. Emperor Naruhito attended—the first time a Japanese emperor had been at a baseball game in almost 70 years (since 1966, when Shigeo Nagashima homered). Manager Hirokazu Ibata said it was "a must-win game" and that he was "so pleased to get a win" in front of the Emperor's family. Japan had already locked up a quarterfinal spot after Chinese Taipei beat Korea earlier; Australia (2-1) faces Korea Monday (6 a.m. ET, FS1) and can still advance, with tiebreakers possible. Manager Dave Nilsson said: "We're just going to play to win. It's another team and that's as simple as it gets." The top two teams from Pool C advance to the quarterfinals in Miami (March 13–14).

How the game unfolded

MacDonald and Sugano traded zeros through the early innings. Australia's defense helped in the fourth: with two outs and the bases loaded and Shohei Ohtani at the plate, Robbie Perkins fired to Jarryd Dale at short, who tagged Shugo Maki before he could dive back to second to end the inning. Whitefield's steal and the wild throw gave Australia the lead in the sixth.

Kennedy's missed catch in the seventh gave Japan an extra out and Yoshida made it count with his two-run homer. Sato and Suzuki extended the lead to 4-1 in the eighth. Hall and Wingrove's homers in the ninth made it close, but Ota closed the door. Nilsson said he was "really proud of Connor" and that "it just shows how hard he worked and how he's used the ABL to prepare for this moment." Japan gets a day off before facing Czechia on the final day of the pool; Australia turns to Lachlan Wells (KBO's LG Twins) for Monday's game against Korea.

Pool C context and what's next

Pool C at Tokyo Dome is one of the toughest groups in the 2026 WBC. Japan (3-0) has the top seed; Australia (2-1), Korea (1-2), and Chinese Taipei (2-2) are in the mix for the second spot or tiebreakers. Czechia is eliminated. Pool play runs through March 11; every game will shape who advances to Miami.
