WBC 2026: Chinese Taipei Rolls Past Czechia 14-0 for First Win (Mercy Rule)
Chinese Taipei picked up its first win of the 2026 World Baseball Classic by defeating Czechia 14-0 in seven innings (mercy rule) on Saturday afternoon, March 7, 2026, at Tokyo Dome in Pool C. After going 0-2 and failing to score in their first two games, Chinese Taipei woke up the bats: two runs in the first (bunt singles, double steal, error, Yu Chang RBI single), then Stuart Fairchild (Guardians) hit a grand slam with the bases loaded in the second to break it open. Yu Chang had three hits and four RBIs; Chen-Wei Chen drove in three. Starter Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang (Athletics No. 27 prospect) went 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts for the win. Czechia—a roster of mostly amateur players—drops to 0-3 and is likely headed to a Qualifier for the next tournament. Chinese Taipei stays alive and must beat Korea to have a chance to advance. The top two teams from Pool C advance to the quarterfinals in Miami. Czechia faces Japan on Tuesday; Chinese Taipei faces Korea next.
How the game unfolded
Manager Hao-Jiu Tseng said the team went "back to the fundamentals" after two sluggish games—and the result was immediate. In the first, Chinese Taipei scored two runs with the ball barely leaving the ground: bunt singles (including one by Stuart Fairchild), a double steal with a throwing error, and an RBI single past shortstop Vojtech Menšík from former big leaguer Yu Chang made it 2-0.
In the second, Fairchild came up with the bases loaded. The night before he had hit a long drive ruled foul that he still believes was fair; this time there was no doubt—he hit a grand slam to put Chinese Taipei in control.
From there, Chinese Taipei put the game away; Yu Chang finished with three hits and four RBIs, Chen-Wei Chen drove in three, and the pitching staff held Czechia off the board. The 14-0 margin triggered the mercy rule after seven innings. Czechia manager Pavel Chadim said with a laugh that "it's not a bad feeling if the defending Premier12 world champion bunts with their No. 3 hitter ... because they're afraid—but only in the first inning."

Pool C context and what's next
Pool C at Tokyo Dome is one of the toughest groups in the 2026 WBC. Australia, Japan, and Korea are in the driver's seat; Chinese Taipei kept its slim hopes alive with this win. Manager Tseng said tomorrow's game is "also an elimination game" and that the full roster is available. Czechia has two days off before facing Japan on Tuesday; the Czechs recently won bronze at the European Baseball Championship—the first medal in the country's history—and catcher Martin Červenka said the WBC helps showcase Czech baseball worldwide. Pool play runs through March 11.
