WBC 2026 Final Preview: USA vs. Venezuela

WBC 2026 Final Preview: USA vs. Venezuela

The World Baseball Classic championship game is set for Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET (FOX) at loanDepot Park in Miami: Team USA vs. Venezuela. The United States is in its third consecutive final after edging the Dominican Republic 2-1 in the semifinals behind Paul Skenes, Gunnar Henderson, and Roman Anthony. Venezuela is in its first-ever WBC final after rallying past Italy 4-2 on Monday, riding six relievers and a three-run seventh. The USA won a coin flip and will be the designated home team. Nolan McLean (Mets) is expected to start for the Americans; Eduardo Rodríguez (Diamondbacks) will get the ball for Venezuela. The matchup pits the tournament's most consistent power (USA's pitching and defense) against Venezuela's breakthrough run and a lineup built around Ronald Acuña Jr., Luis Arraez, and Salvador Pérez.

Team USA has been carried more by pitching and defense than by explosive offense in this Classic. The bullpen was critical in the semifinal—Tyler Rogers, David Bednar, Garrett Whitlock, and Mason Miller protected a 2-1 lead—and the Americans will need early runs to avoid overtaxing the pen again. Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Gunnar Henderson, Bobby Witt Jr., and Kyle Schwarber headline the order. Venezuela, by contrast, used its bullpen heavily on Monday; E-Rod was roughed up by the Dominican Republic (three runs, two homers in 2 2/3 innings) in pool play, and his strikeout rate has declined over the last two seasons. If López sees "red flags" again, Venezuela will need its relievers—many of whom did not pitch Monday—to step up. Venezuela is playing for redemption after losing to the USA in the 2023 quarterfinals; the USA is playing for its second WBC title (2017) and a third straight appearance in the final.

Key matchups

USA offense vs. Eduardo Rodríguez: E-Rod must navigate Judge, Harper, Henderson, and Witt without the benefit of a fully rested bullpen behind him. If he can give Venezuela five solid innings, López can piece together the rest.

Venezuela offense vs. Nolan McLean and USA pen: Venezuela's lineup—Acuña, Arraez, Pérez, Jackson Chourio, Maikel Garcia, Gleyber Torres, Eugenio Suárez—can score in bunches. McLean is a young arm; the USA will need length and then high-leverage relief to hold a lead.

Narrative: Third straight final vs. first-ever final. USA favored; Venezuela has already made history and will play loose. Miami's Venezuelan community will make loanDepot Park loud for the visitors.
