Rangers 2, Nationals 0: deGrom Hits 2,000 K's on a One-Hitter

Two strikeouts into the night, and the board said 2,000

August 20, 2026 - Arlington - Jacob deGrom needed two strikeouts when he took the mound. He got Daylen Lile. He got Abimelec Ortiz swinging through a slider at the ankles. The right-field board lit up. Globe Life stood.

Then he kept pitching.

deGrom (9-8) threw six innings, one hit, one walk, 10 strikeouts, zero runs. Three relievers finished a combined one-hitter. The Texas Rangers beat the Washington Nationals 2-0. Texas's 12th shutout of the year. Another chapter in a series where every game ended 0 on one side of the scoreboard.

Seager's homer was enough. Barely.

Corey Seager hit an opposite-field solo shot in the third, his fourth straight two-hit game. That was the only run until the eighth, when Ezequiel Duran tripled and scored on Nicky Lopez's sacrifice fly.

Texas went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on. The pitching made the waste harmless. Washington's only hit was Brady House's single in the second. House also drew the only walk deGrom allowed. Nobody else reached.

Andrés Álvarez (2-5) lasted five and took the loss. Jakob Junis, Chase Silseth, and Jacob Latz (25th save) closed the last three frames. Latz struck out the side around a walk in the ninth.

The milestone, then the win he wanted more

deGrom reached 2,000 strikeouts in the second-fewest games (272) and innings in major league history, behind only Randy Johnson (games) and Chris Sale (innings). He tipped his cap, then said the quiet part out loud: personal marks are nice. The goal was zeroes against a Nationals club that had been scoring.

A week earlier he left after two innings with triceps fatigue. Skip Schumaker pushed the start back a day instead of reaching for the IL. Thursday was the answer: 94 pitches, a season-high-tying 10 K's, and a wild-card race that stayed tied for the last American League spot.
