August 8, 2026 - Pittsburgh - The Mets' night ended before most fans had finished parking. Three runs in the first inning, a wild pitch and a couple of doubles in the fourth, and a Pittsburgh Pirates lineup that never let up turned this into a 9-0 laugher over the New York Mets.
Bubba Chandler made sure it stayed that way, throwing six scoreless innings against a lineup that had no answer for him.
Three runs before New York settled in
Mets starter R. Stock never found any rhythm. Ronny Simon doubled in two runs in the first, and Pittsburgh was up 3-0 before Stock recorded his third out. He didn't get much better from there. By the time he left in the third, the Pirates had touched him for eight runs on nine hits in three innings, a line that will sting more the longer it sits on the stat sheet.
The fourth inning turned a comfortable lead into a rout. A wild pitch let a run score, and doubles further down the order pushed Pittsburgh's advantage to 8-0. Jake Mangum was in the middle of it all night, collecting multiple doubles and reaching base repeatedly against a Mets pitching staff that had nothing left to give.
Brandon Lowe added a solo home run in the seventh, an exclamation point on a night that had stopped being competitive three innings earlier.
Chandler doesn't need the extra cushion, but takes it anyway
Chandler didn't need nine runs of support. Six innings, three hits, zero runs, five strikeouts. He worked efficiently, attacked the strike zone, and let a lineup with a nine-run head start play loose behind him. New York never had a runner in scoring position with fewer than two outs against him.
It's the kind of start that keeps a rotation spot secure, even on a team that's spent the summer looking for consistency from its young arms. Chandler gave Pittsburgh length, zeros, and swings and misses. On a night the offense did all the heavy lifting early, he made sure none of it went to waste.
For the Mets, this is the sort of loss you try to forget quickly. Stock's final line, eight runs allowed in three innings, will get buried in a lineup card and rarely mentioned again, which is probably the only mercy available after a night like this one.
AthX Engine angle
Pittsburgh finished with 21 AthX Engine team fantasy points, the highest total of any club on the August 8 slate. Chandler's outing was worth 23 AthX Engine pitching fantasy points, third-best among all starters that night behind only Sandy Alcantara and Gerrit Cole.

What it means
Pittsburgh needed a night like this, a complete performance from a young arm paired with a lineup that didn't let a starting pitcher off the hook once the damage began. The Mets, meanwhile, need their fifth starter to find something before the next turn through the rotation, because outings like Stock's are the ones that turn a rebuilding year into a long August.
