Patriots 20, Steelers 3: Henderson, Then a Fumble Return

September 20, 2026 - Foxborough - Aaron Rodgers spent a wet Sunday getting hit. Christian Barmore stripped him in the fourth quarter. Elijah Ponder picked it up and ran 19 yards. That was the second New England touchdown, and it was also the last score the Pittsburgh Steelers allowed in a 20-3 loss at Gillette Stadium.

The New England Patriots are 1-1. Pittsburgh is 0-2 on the road after opening at Atlanta. Mike Vrabel avoided a second 0-2 start in eight years as a head coach, ESPN said. The defense scored as many touchdowns as the offense. Drake Maye called the attack not where we want to be.

Maye was 14 of 22 for 208 yards and one interception. He was sacked three times. Rodgers was 23 of 39 for 187, no touchdowns, and his first interception of the season. New England sacked him four times. Two of those were strip-sacks, the Steelers said.

7-0 on Henderson's first carry that mattered

Marcus Jones returned a punt 19 yards. Rhamondre Stevenson came off. TreVeyon Henderson came on for his season debut. Three plays later he found a crease and scored from 39, ESPN and the AP wrote. The Steelers recap listed it as 29. nflverse has Henderson at 16 carries for 76 and one rushing touchdown. We are using 39, matching ESPN, the AP, and CBS.

Chris Boswell made 56. That was Pittsburgh's only points. He also missed 57. New England led 7-3 and could not put the game away because Maye and Stevenson kept donating drives. Stevenson fumbled again in Steelers territory, the Patriots observations said. Maye floated one toward Hunter Henry with three defenders nearby. Patrick Queen intercepted it after a 29-yard catch to Romeo Doubs had already moved them to the Pittsburgh 33.

Doubs for 63, then the defense finishes it

Doubs had no catches in his Patriots debut. On Sunday he took a busted coverage 63 yards, the club wrote, part of a sail concept into cover-six. Andy Borregales made 45 after that explosion. He had already made 30. He missed 47. Two extras were good.

Leading 13-3, Barmore punched the ball out. Ponder scored with 13:37 left. 20-3. Rodgers was sacked again on the next series. Pittsburgh went three-and-out. Germie Bernard led the Steelers with four catches for 35. Jaylen Warren ran 11 times for 43 and caught two for 34, including a 26-yarder that was Pittsburgh's longest play.

New England outgained Pittsburgh 327-235 and outrushed it 137-91, the Steelers said. Four sacks, two takeaways, three points allowed. Christian Gonzalez shadowed DK Metcalf at times, ESPN wrote, and Rodgers had to look elsewhere. Metcalf did not own this box.

A win that did not fix the offense

Maye generated chunk plays of 63, 30, 29, and 29, the Patriots said, and still threw his fourth interception of the season. T.J. Watt had 1.5 sacks. He also rolled up Mike Onwenu's right ankle on a sack of Maye. Onwenu hopped to a cart. Dre'Mont Jones (shoulder), Eli Raridon (thigh), Dell Pettus (ankle), and Marcus Jones all exited in the second quarter. Craig Woodson (shoulder) left in the third.

The Globe's instant analysis was blunt: you cannot feel good about this offense. Maye has eight interceptions in his last six games including the playoffs, that piece said. The scoreboard still read 20-3. Pittsburgh's first road trip of the year ended in a defensive slog, the club wrote, with one coverage lapse turning into Henderson's run. Vrabel had the win he needed before Jacksonville and Buffalo. He did not have a clean quarterback tape.

Warren never found a seam that stuck. Eleven carries for 43 is a road game that never got going. Rodgers's first interception of the year arrived late, after the fumble return had already made it 20-3. Watt's 1.5 sacks were the Steelers' best individual pass-rush line. They did not move the scoreboard.

Borregales's two field goals and two extras are the rest of the 20. The Patriots hit seven explosives and still scored 13 offensive points. That is the honest sheet. Jacksonville was next. Pittsburgh went home to host Cincinnati.

AthX Engine on a 20-3 defensive night

AthX Engine NFL scoring already has the Week 2 Sunday line in. Elliss's sack and forced fumble land at 48.00, the top total in this game. Ponder is 42.50. Barmore is 38.00. Joshua Farmer is 33.00. Doubs is 25.50. Henderson is 25.00. New England's team line is 74.25. Pittsburgh is -26.50.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for a Patriots defense that just held Rodgers to 187 yards, and for Maye after another pick in a win. They move together. They are not the same number.

Track Maye, Henderson, Doubs, Rodgers, Watt, and both clubs on the marketplace. New England visited Jacksonville on Sept. 27. Pittsburgh hosted Cincinnati that afternoon.
