Padres 7, Giants 0: Marquez and Matsui Combine on Two-Hit Shutout

Two hits for San Francisco. Seven runs for San Diego.

July 31, 2026 – San Diego – One night after Robbie Ray and Daniel Susac beat them, the Padres returned the favor without allowing a run.

Yuki Matsui threw three scoreless innings. Germán Márquez followed with five more, allowing one hit. The San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 7-0 at Petco Park, limited San Francisco to two hits, and snapped any leftover momentum from Thursday's series opener loss.

Whisenhunt never settled. France kept answering.

Carson Whisenhunt lasted 3 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits with four walks. San Diego scored two in the first, added one in the third, and broke it open with three in the fourth. Ty France drove in three runs. Jase Bowen hit a solo homer in the fourth. Luis Campusano added an RBI as part of a three-hit night.

Fernando Tatis Jr. doubled, walked twice, scored twice, and stole a base. Luis Rengifo reached, scored three times, and kept the top of the order noisy. The Padres collected 12 hits and five walks. The Giants never forced a clean defensive half once the early runs landed.

Adrian Houser absorbed 4 2/3 innings of mop-up and allowed the last San Diego run. By then the night was already decided.

Marquez turned a bulk role into a board leader

Márquez entered after Matsui and Bradgley Rodriguez and threw five innings with one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts. Officially it went down as a save. On the field it was the bulk of a two-hit shutout. Matsui earned the win with three innings, one hit, and two strikeouts.

That combination is how contenders steal series after a loss: short early innings, long quiet bulk, and an offense that does not need extra innings when the first four already produced six runs.
