Nationals 6, Rangers 0: Cavalli Shuts Down Texas on the Road

August 19, 2026 - Arlington - José Tena led off the third with a solo homer to center, and that was enough to make Kyle Rocker pay for a quiet first two innings. The Washington Nationals kept adding. The Texas Rangers never answered.

Final: Nationals 6, Rangers 0. Texas finished with four hits and 13 strikeouts. Washington had two homers and a road shutout built around the same arm that nearly no-hit the Cubs six days earlier at Nationals Park.

Cade Cavalli (11-5) worked six innings, three hits, zero runs, one walk, 11 strikeouts. Jordan Montgomery threw the last two scoreless for Texas and still took the loss because the offense never showed. That is the whole story in one sentence if you are in a hurry. If you are not, stay for the seventh.

Chaparro turns a 3-0 game into a rout

Rocker (4-10) lasted five innings and allowed two earned runs. Tena's homer was the first. Andrés Chaparro scored on a Keibert Ruiz single in the fourth. Ildemaro Vargas grounded out to the pitcher in the sixth, Chaparro scoring, Ruiz moving to third. 3-0.

Then the seventh rewrote the box score. Chaparro hit a three-run homer to left, Abimelec Ortiz and Tena aboard. 6-0. One swing, and a competent road start became a night the Rangers would rather delete.

Texas had chances early. Corey Seager doubled among the four hits. The Rangers went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Cavalli did not need perfect defense. He needed misses, and he got 11 of them by strikeout.

What it means for both clubs

Washington is 61-67 and still playing like a team with a starter who can dominate on any given week. Cavalli has now thrown eight innings of one-hit ball against Chicago and followed it with six shutout frames in Arlington. That is not a fluke trend. That is a healthy ace showing up twice in one road trip.

Texas is 62-65 and coming off a shutout win over these same Nationals on Tuesday. Wednesday flipped the script completely. When your lineup whiffs 13 times and never scores, the conversation is not about one bad at-bat. It is about whether the middle of the order can support the pitching staff down the stretch.
