August 9, 2026 - Pittsburgh - One night after getting shut out 9-0 in this same building, the Mets showed up looking like a different team entirely.
Sean Manaea struck out 11 over seven innings, the New York Mets pounded out 15 hits, and New York beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1 to even the two-game series at a game apiece.
A three-run third breaks it open
New York didn't wait to get even. A first-inning single and sacrifice fly gave the Mets an early 2-0 lead, and Pirates starter Jared Jones never found his footing after that. Luis Robert Jr. turned a shaky third inning into a rout, driving a two-run homer to center that pushed the score to 5-0 in a frame where New York plated three runs total.
Jones didn't survive the fourth. A four-run inning, capped by a Bo Bichette double that scored multiple runners, chased him with the Mets already up 9-0. His final line, eight earned runs on six hits in three innings, is the kind of afternoon a young rotation arm needs to shake off fast.
Francisco Alvarez added a solo homer in the fifth, and Pittsburgh's lone run, a Jake Mangum solo shot in the third, did nothing to slow the bleeding.
Manaea does the rest with a fastball nobody could find
Manaea's final line looked almost unfair next to what happened around him: seven innings, three hits, one earned run, 11 strikeouts, and not a single walk. He needed the cushion about as much as Alcantara needed his shutout support the night before, which is to say not at all, but New York's lineup made sure he never had to sweat it.
This was the version of Manaea the Mets have been waiting on. A rotation that's leaned heavily on inconsistent length got seven clean innings and a strikeout total that would have been a season high on plenty of other nights around the league.
What a same-building split says about both clubs
Two games, two lopsided results, and a split that tells you more about each team's pitching depth than anything else. New York's front-line arm outdueled Pittsburgh's developing one, and the lineup that managed nothing off Bubba Chandler a night earlier looked completely different against a rookie still finding his command.
For the Pirates, it's a reminder that Chandler's Friday gem was the outlier, not the rule, on a staff still waiting for its younger arms to catch up. For the Mets, Manaea's start is exactly the kind of outing a fringe playoff contender needs more of down the stretch.
