The Boston Red Sox led 2-0. The Arizona Diamondbacks had other plans and extra innings to finish them.
Final: Diamondbacks 7, Red Sox 6 in 10. Three Boston homers. One Arizona homer. Two runs in the 10th that decided it on walks and an infield single.
Back and forth before the sixth
Brandon Pfaadt worked 5 2/3 innings for Arizona and allowed five runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. The Diamondbacks trailed 2-0 until the fifth. Jacob Waldschmidt doubled home a run. Gabriel Moreno doubled home Corbin Carroll and Waldschmidt. 3-2 Arizona.
Boston answered in the sixth with one swing. Mickey Gasper homered to right-center with two outs, Rafael Devers and William Contreras aboard. 5-5. Fenway had gone quiet, then loud, then confused about who had the lead.
Lars Nootbaar had put Arizona back ahead in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer, Nolan Arenado scoring. 5-2 at that moment. Gasper erased it three outs later.
The 10th at Fenway
Arizona scored twice in the 10th without a homer. Arenado reached on an infield single and Moreno scored. 6-5. A walk brought home another run. 7-5. Trevor Story grounded out for Boston in the bottom half, Rafaela scoring. 7-6. Jonathan Loáisiga worked two scoreless for the win. Payton Tolle took the loss.
This is the kind of Fenway night that lives on the schedule page as Final/10 and in the standings as one more game Arizona needed to steal on the road.
