Cubs 8, Nationals 6: Crow-Armstrong and Bregman Power Chicago to 20 Over .500

August 11, 2026 - Washington - CJ Abrams and Jacob Young homered in the first two innings, and Nationals Park had a 3-1 Washington Nationals lead before the Chicago Cubs remembered they are supposed to be the team running away with the wild-card race.

Chicago scored in five straight innings. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman, and Seiya Suzuki homered. The Cubs won 8-6 and moved 20 games over .500 for the first time all season.

Early homers, then five innings of answers

Abrams' two-run shot in the first and Young's solo homer in the second gave Washington a 3-1 lead and the look of a club ready to make the wild-card race uncomfortable. Chicago was 34-34 on June 10. Since then the Cubs are 36-16. Tuesday was another night where the early deficit felt like a formality.

Crow-Armstrong's third-inning homer traveled 437 feet. Bregman went deep in the same frame. Bregman finished 2-for-4 with three runs. Carson Kelly put Chicago ahead 4-3 with an RBI groundout in the fourth. Suzuki's eighth-inning homer made it 8-4. Washington scratched back to 8-6 in the eighth before Jacob Webb closed it for his eighth save.

Shota Imanaga allowed three homers and did not finish the fifth. Ryan Rolison picked up the win in relief. The Cubs did not pitch cleanly. They hit until the lead felt safe anyway.

Twenty over, and the Central is still in the rearview

Chicago is 70-50. Milwaukee still leads the NL Central, but the Cubs' wild-card cushion is the story that matters in August. Nico Hoerner had a steal and an RBI. The lineup scored eight on nine hits without needing a blowout inning. Washington got homers from Abrams, Young, and Dylan Crews and still lost.

Jake Irvin took the loss after 3 1/3 innings and five earned runs. The Nationals are 59-62. They can hit home runs. They cannot keep the Cubs from turning a 3-1 hole into an 8-4 lead and holding on.

What 36-16 since June 10 actually means

That is not a hot week. That is two months of playing like a team that expects to win the close ones and the not-so-close ones. Crow-Armstrong's 27th homer is part of a season where Chicago's offense stopped waiting for perfect matchups. Bregman's three runs scored is part of a lineup that keeps answering when the starter exits early.

I am less interested in whether the Cubs can stay 20 over than whether they keep winning these 8-6 nights when Imanaga gives up three homers. That is the profile of a club built for October math, not just September standings.

AthX Engine angle

Chicago finished with 13 AthX Engine team fantasy points, third on the Tuesday board. Bregman led the bats at 9 hitting fantasy points. Suzuki added 8. Washington finished with 3 team fantasy points despite three homers, because the bullpen and Irvin gave the runs back.
