August 12, 2026 - Washington - Alex Bregman walked twice before he ever put a ball in play. Then he hit a sweeper into the visitors' bullpen, pulled another one to left, and sent a fastball into the Chicago bullpen in the eighth. Three swings. Seven RBI. First three-homer game of his career.
The Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 12-6 at Nationals Park and moved 21 games over .500 for the first time this season. They have won eight of nine. Milwaukee still leads the NL Central, but the gap is three games, and nights like this are why the Cubs look like a club that expects to keep closing it.
Two walks, then the visitors' bullpen
Washington scored first. Harry Ford reached, traffic piled up, and Daylen Lile chopped a single through the left side in the second. 1-0, Nationals, and Jackson Kent was still in his major league debut, throwing strikes and walking a crowd.
Kent lasted four-plus innings. Three hits, three runs, five walks, six strikeouts. The walks were the problem. Bregman took two of them. Pedro Ramírez and Dansby Swanson kept reaching. The Cubs did not cash any of it until the fifth, and then they cashed all of it.
Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled to right and tied the game. Bregman, facing Jake Bird, lofted a sweeper to left-center. Three runs. 4-1, Chicago, and the inning finally looked like the one the Cubs had been building since the first walk.
Washington tied it in the bottom of the fifth. Ford doubled in Brady House. Lile singled in two more. 4-4, and David Peterson had already thrown enough traffic to make a five-inning win feel expensive.
The sixth that made the rest of the night a formality
[Tom Cosgrove] took the loss because Swanson doubled in Ian Happ and put Chicago back in front, 5-4. Seiya Suzuki singled in two off Yovanny Cruz. Bregman pulled a two-run shot to left. 9-4, five runs in the inning, and the Nationals were chasing a game that had already left.
Abimelec Ortiz answered with a solo homer in the sixth. That was the last time Washington felt close. Swanson went deep to center in the eighth, his 18th of the year. Bregman followed with a two-run drive off Trevor Williams into the Cubs bullpen. Homers in three straight at-bats. 12-5.
José Tena hit a solo shot in the ninth. The final was 12-6, and it still undersold how completely Bregman owned the middle of the order.
Peterson survived. Assad finished it.
Peterson went five innings, nine hits, four runs (three earned), six strikeouts, three walks. He improved to 7-7. The Associated Press noted he is 9-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 17 appearances against Washington and has never allowed a home run in 86 1/3 innings against them. Wednesday was not pretty. It was enough.
Javier Assad threw the last four innings for his second save. Two homers, two earned, and a game that never got back to one swing. Chicago used two pitchers. Washington used five. That is the difference between a rout and a bullpen fire.
Lile finished with three RBI. Ford had two hits and two runs. CJ Abrams walked twice and stole a base and did not get a hit. The Nationals had 11 hits and 10 left on base. They can make contact. They could not keep Bregman in the yard.
Twenty-one over, and the Central is still the only race that matters
Chicago is 71-50. The Cubs have won eight of nine and, per the AP recap, their ninth straight road series. They will try to sweep Thursday, with Kevin Gausman against Cade Cavalli.
Bregman signed for five years and $175 million in January. The first half was quiet enough that people started asking if the Cubs had bought a September version of him. Since July 27 he has been the hitter they paid for. Six of his 16 homers this season have come against Washington. Four of them came in the first two games of this series.
Swanson was the last Cub with a three-homer game, on July 1 against San Diego. Bregman is the second this year. He is also, per MLB.com's Sarah Langs, the first Cub ever with three homers and multiple walks in the same game. The walks are the part that tells you the night was not just three swings. He made Kent throw strikes, then he punished everyone who came in after.
I am less interested in crowning a three-homer night as a turning point than in the simpler fact: Chicago keeps winning the games it is supposed to win, and Bregman is finally the reason instead of the question.
AthX Engine angle
The Cubs finished with 21 AthX Engine team fantasy points, first on Wednesday's board. Bregman led every hitter on the slate at 24 hitting fantasy points. Swanson added 11. Ramírez had 9. Washington finished at -1 team fantasy points despite Lile's three RBI and two homers, because 12 runs against will do that.
Fantasy points measure what a player did. Price is what the market will pay. They move together, but they are not the same number.
