Brewers 9, Cubs 4: Yelich and Ortiz Turn Wrigley Around

Chicago led 3-0 after four. Milwaukee scored the next nine.

September 1, 2026 – Chicago – Tyrone Taylor doubled Seiya Suzuki and Alex Bregman home in the fourth. Nico Hoerner reached on a missed catch by Robert Gasser, and Taylor scored. 3-0, Cubs, Wrigley, and the inning still felt like a Milwaukee problem.

It was not. The Milwaukee Brewers scored one in the fifth, four in the sixth, two in the seventh, and two in the eighth. They beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4. Christian Yelich and Joey Ortiz supplied the homers. Daniel Palencia took the loss and the blown save in two-thirds of an inning.

Boyd was fine until Palencia was not

Matthew Boyd threw 5 1/3 innings: seven hits, three runs, one walk, three strikeouts. Milwaukee's first run was a Cooper Pratt single in the fifth, scoring Luis Lara. Then the sixth.

Andrew Vaughn doubled William Contreras home. Palencia came in. Yelich hit a two-run homer to right-center, his 10th, scoring Sal Frelick. 5-3, Milwaukee. Palencia: two-thirds of an inning, two hits, two runs, one homer. The Cubs had led. They did not lead again.

Contreras doubled Jackson Chourio home in the seventh. Frelick singled Contreras home. Ortiz homered in the eighth, his eighth, scoring Yelich. Ryan Zeferjahn, Caleb Thielbar, and Tyler Ferguson each gave some of it back. None of them got it back.

Contreras finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. Chourio had two hits and a stolen base. Brice Turang had two hits. Ortiz went 2-for-4 with the homer. Yelich's homer was the swing that flipped the score. Ortiz's homer was the one that ended the argument.

Gasser survived the fourth. Senzatela got the win.

Gasser: 4 1/3 innings, three hits, three runs, two earned, two walks, four strikeouts. The unearned run was Taylor scoring on Gasser's missed catch. Antonio Senzatela threw the sixth, allowed one run, and got the win. JoJo Romero held. Abner Uribe struck out two in a clean eighth. Aaron Ashby and DL Hall each threw a scoreless inning.

Chicago's fourth-inning three was the entire threat until Hoerner scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth. Michael Busch doubled and stayed there. Carson Kelly drove in that sixth-inning run and nothing else. Pete Crow-Armstrong did not reach the hit column that showed up in the scoring.

A 9-4 road win at Wrigley is still a division game. Milwaukee just spent five innings proving it.

The homers moved the score. The bullpen kept it from moving back.

What's next

Milwaukee left town with a comeback that started on Palencia's watch. Boyd's 5 1/3 was a decent Cubs start that the next wave did not protect. Yelich has a Wrigley homer in September. That tends to travel.
