Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski Dies at 89
Bill Mazeroski, the Hall of Fame second baseman and Pittsburgh Pirates legend, died on February 20, 2026, at age 89 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania.
Career
Mazeroski is best known for hitting baseball’s first walk-off home run to end a World Series—Game 7 against the New York Yankees at Forbes Field in 1960. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001, largely on the strength of his defense: eight Gold Gloves, a record 1,706 double plays by a middle infielder, and a .983 career fielding percentage. He was a 10-time National League All-Star and played his entire 17-year career (1956–1972) with Pittsburgh, finishing with 2,016 hits and helping the Pirates to two World Series titles.
